Fifteen years ago, I read an article in a magazine about a Ternopil resident who opened a restaurant where food is cooked in a real oven. As you know, the article was about the restaurant "Old Mill".

The owner of the institution is a big fan of Antonio Gaudi. And so the "appearance" of the restaurant echoes the work of a brilliant Spaniard. Judge for yourself: here are the smooth lines, as in Casa Mila:

and mosaic bench, as in Park Guell:

and much more: )

Inside the following "pseudo-folk" interiors:

In my opinion, it's like nothing out of the ordinary. But keep in mind that the restaurant is +/- fifteen years old. And at the time of its founding, all these decisions were truly avant-garde.

The restaurant is built on the site and on the foundation of a really old mill. At the beginning of the last century, a good man named Daniel Stekel lived in Ternopil. He owned a mill standing at a fork in the road. Very well equipped at that time (flour was ground by 3 motors, and 39 people worked at the mill):

Shtekel lived in the heart of Ternopil and was a very respected citizen. When Ternopil became a Polish city after the collapse of Austria-Hungary, Stekel was elected to the city council. And "deputy" until 1939. And in 1939 Ternopil became Soviet. And Stekel was repressed. The mill stopped working. And during the Second World War it was severely damaged. But even after the war, Ternopil residents still scheduled meetings "near the Stekel mill. "

The modern restaurant opened on the site of the Stekel mill consists of two separate buildings.

In one only Ukrainian cuisine, in the other - Italian and Japanese. Without hesitation, they chose their own, dear.

The menu is a wooden kitchen cutting board with burnt text on both sides:

By the way, the menu was geysebubel : ). However, we did not taste it. I wrote about geysers later here: About food. Korosten. Derun Fest

At the beginning of the meal, a Ukrainian drug is served as a compliment from the institution, you know which one:

Remembering what happened on the eve of the gluttony in another Ternopil restaurant "Ark" (owned by the same chain "Moonshine Restaurant"), this time decided to be restrained. And to speak modestly: for borscht and salad.

I knew from those who had been to the Old Mill before us that the "chip" of the establishment was considered to be a borsch in bread, red or green.

Only no one warned about the size of the "pan":

Salads were also atypical, and traditionally Galician. Beetroot, for example, was seasoned with crushed nuts with honey-mustard dressing. Delicacies! She took up arms:

At the end of the meal, despite the inhuman satiety (look again at the photo of the pan, hi-hi), I decided to "polish" the whole thing American with cherry strudel. Who knew that sugar for coffee is served in buckets, milk in cans:

And on a saucer with strudel do not be lazy to draw you yaaagodku:

Summary: 2 salads, 2 green borscht in bread, beer, compote, Americano and strudel cost us only 330.00 UAH. (11 euros).

In the "Old Mill" the saying about "from big to funny one step" is very accurately realized.

Thus, in one of the halls there is a concert costume of the Ukrainian baritone Dmytro Hnatiuk (well, at least once in my life everyone has heard his performance of "Two Colors" and "My Kyiv", better known as "How can I not love you, my Kyiv ... ") . It turned out that the owner was friends with the singer, and Hnatyuk gave him his costume.

However, the fun awaited us in a completely unexpected place. From where I, powdering my nose, ran back to our table behind the camera:

But it turned out that the main secret of the institution is hidden in the men's room:

Yes, it was mentioned on the Internet that the restaurant has a museum of home brewing. Unfortunately, we were asked to find out if it works and if you can look at the exhibition. But already at home I saw information that the museum "moved" to Bukovel.

Summary.

The "old mill" is not bad. Even good. As many as two "Auditor's" signs hang in a prominent place. And during our visit there were several Polish-speaking companies in the hall. But for all the charm, he personally reminded me more of such a tourist attraction, like "Kryivka" in Lviv. And if the "Ark" is characterized by a kind of emotional atmosphere, the "Old Mill" receives guests somehow by inertia, or… But still, being in Ternopil, you must make an impression of this place.

Зеленый борщ в хлебе. Хорош. Единственное, ближе к концу поедания жидкость бОльшей частью впитывается в стенки хлебушка, и уже поедаешь такую хлебно-суповую кашку. Но все равно вкусно было.
