Plitvice lakes
What is the best way to go to Plitvice Lakes without renting a car? I really want to. And yet, where is the best place to book excursions in Makarska?

It is important to understand that you want to "keep within" one day of light back and forth. Or do you want to spend the night on the lakes? If without an overnight stay, then there are no options! From Makarska you will not have time in any way (well, a taxi, perhaps). Or an excursion.
If you are considering an option with an overnight stay, then theoretically in 2 days, it is possible. Is the option for two days with an overnight stay on the lakes suitable?

Croatia has excellent bus and ferry connections. Do not rush to buy excursions from a tour operator (well, maybe, except for Plitvice Lakes and Krk Park, it’s inconvenient to get there). You can safely go to Split, Trogir, Sibenik, Dubrovnik by bus, you can easily find the bus station, it is close to the center and your hotel. Good excursions from the locals to the islands on different boats with lunch (there are a lot of offers on the embankment, the prices are pleasant). If you like hiking, take a walk along the path along the sea towards Baska Voda. As for Plitvice, I was there three times with different excursions, and I can say that if you are going for less than two weeks and in summer, leave this excursion for the next time, it is very tiring, part of the road is serpentine, heat, there is nowhere to even buy a drink, then several kilometers on foot along with a crowd of tourists. Now the route on the lakes is almost halved, and you pay for the full version (in recent years). Plitvice lakes are very beautiful, but how much can you perceive this beauty after 5 hours on the bus, arriving in the afternoon sun?

Thanks for the answers, but I really want to go to Plitvice. We are going at the end of August/beginning of September. Last year we experienced a trip from Bulgaria to Istanbul, tiring, but it's nothing with our impressions. How about a private excursion to Plitvice with 4 people, is it possible and how much does it cost?

The lakes are definitely worth a visit, but the question is how and when is better. We have been to Croatia many times, but we did not rent a car. If there are four of you, it might make sense. By the way, there are many small private hotels around Plitvice Lakes, on our first visit we lived in one, we liked it very much and for very little money, you can order through booking or Croatian sites. Taxi is quite expensive ~ 150 kn per 10 km, we didn’t go further. I won’t answer about individual excursions, but in addition to the offer of tour operators in Makarska, there are local travel agencies on the streets and just people with posters on the embankment, you can always agree (as in the Crimea). In the same agencies, you can rent a car, they will tell you.

BalIrina, if you really want to, then allocate at least two days! Overnight there. That is, on the first day you have a road, maybe you’ll even have time to look at something with one eye (you can go there for free in the evening, you just can’t see anything much, you can’t see it) + dinner. Then you will spend the night, from the very morning (the most chic), before the arrival of crowds of tourists, you will go in, walk all the way and leave.
If you are ready for an overnight stay, then it is definitely worth it.
If you do not want to spend the night, then I think you should not go.
But there are two options - a tour with other tourists (which in my opinion is not optimal and not effective) + very tiring. Or taxi/car rental. Which, although more comfortable, is still tense due to the long journey not at all along straight roads.
For one day, public transport (buses) will not work. 99%

Look at the options for buses from Makarska or Split for the dates you need. Conversely, they say not all drivers stop at Plitvice.
