Type in the search engine: Heraklion. Attractions.

The Palace of Knossos is located near Heraklion. You can go by yourself, without excursions.

From Heraklion there is good bus connection to the main cities. You can go to Agios Nikolaos, Chania, Rethymnon. Or rent a car and drive around the whole island.

1) First, at home, determine what exactly interests you: history, art, nature, the sea ... or all at once.
2) Go to the website: www.ktelherlas.gr, look for the bus schedule there. And make a rough plan at home.
3) Arriving in Crete, immediately bypass the nearest travel agencies at your hotel. Choose what they offer (usually a certain language and excursions are "tied" to certain days).
4) You can walk around Heraklion in the evening, find bus stations, find out how to get to them (orient yourself on the ground).
5) If you rent a car, look for companies that rent them. They give a map of the island, draw the recommended itinerary for the trip.
6) Sit down and "combine" bus schedules, your plans, and offers of travel agencies for the duration of your trip together, compiling routes for all days of your stay.
I understood that Heraklion is the central city, from here you can go to all sides of the island. The bus schedule is surprisingly correct (coincides in minutes). But I did not know that there are several bus stations (keep this in mind, they are not nearby). And I didn’t realize the size of Crete: if there is only one bus a day, you won’t get to the desired place

I specifically left the rights at home, because. driving in a foreign country is not a vacation for me, but a companion did not drive a car, i.e. I would "work" and she "rest".
Then I sat down at the hotel in the evening and developed a schedule for myself.
* Travel agency: Santorini (once in 10 days);
* Archaeological Museum - free of charge on the first Sunday of the month + Knossos (close on the topic) - independently;
* Fest (one day a month for free) - independently;
* travel agency: Gortyna-Matala;
* travel agency: trip to the Samaria Gorge (only without the Russians!);
* travel agency - for rest after a hike - an evening of folk songs and dances with nat. dishes;
* travel agency: Dixie Cave
* inspection of Heraklion - on your own
The rest - there was not enough time, or did not find information about the work of the museum, or there are no buses in this direction

Gortyna is the capital of the Roman province in Crete. Remains of temples scattered around the area have been preserved. They show the best preserved and the tree under which, supposedly, Zeus was. Matala is a Roman settlement, caves of that period have been preserved (you can crawl along the wall only at your own peril and risk). In the 20th century, hippies gathered in Matale. When we were (May-June) they also had some kind of gathering there. A very quiet, peaceful place to relax and swim in the Libyan Sea (which is warmer than the Aegean - south). It's better to get everywhere by car. By bus - once a day. I think it's better to take a tour. Then you will be able to see these places, some of the legends will be told. On the way, they are brought to a functioning monastery. There are a couple of medieval Byzantine churches. The rest is later.
Phaistos is one of the palaces of the Minoan civilization (the others: Knossos is the most famous and reconstructed, and Malia is the least known). There they found the famous Phaistos disk with letters that have not yet been deciphered (linear writing A and B). You can watch the disc in Heraklion, in the Archaeological Museum. Even if the restoration is still not over (and they are skillfully "pulling the rubber"), the most valuable exhibits are on display in the open room

As for the prices, I don’t remember anymore: 2 years have passed. I found some piece of paper with prices in 2011. Mesara-Gortina Valley - about 50 euros. Depends on where you will live. Fluctuations in 5 euros.
Lassithi (the cave where Zeus was hidden) - 60 euros.
Samaria - 50 euros. Cretan evening - 60 euros. Santorini - something like 110-130 euros

Regarding the lack of a bus schedule in Russian ... You don’t travel across Russia. And in Greece, actually the Greek language. It is rather difficult to read (well, if it is not written in capital letters). Well, if there is in English (but the translation does not always make sense). On maps, diagrams, signs with the names of settlements, streets, everything MUST BE in the local language of the country where you are. Then you will be guided. So forget about Russian abroad.
Otherwise, it will turn out like with my fellow traveler: while she was waving her "crusts" of an art critic in the museum in Santorini, the museum almost closed, I barely begged at least a couple of halls on the ground floor to show us (and I had to pay the full price for the museum, and even for " the guy "who" shook the rights "). Then I explained to her that if she wanted to get a free pass for an art critic, she had to translate her "crusts" into English at HOME, and not in Russian about her supposedly rights, to prove to the Greeks. (She also sat on the floor in the Herakleon Museum as a sign of protest, the employees wanted to call the police: she also shook the rights to "photography".)

Yes, they still show a theater in Gortyn, a wall with inscriptions (what is the value, I can’t remember now - just from Sweden, my head is busy with other things).

Yes, it seems that during the excursion to Matala they also talked about the production of wine, they brought it to a private farm near the highest mountain of Crete - Ida (you can buy it after tasting it).
If you want, please email me. mail: I will send what is in the PC archive. Address: [email protected]

If you have the opportunity to rent a car, drive to the southern coast of the island (through the mountains not far), this is a completely different Crete, you will not regret it.
