I was in Crete more than 5 years ago. I brought silver items: earrings, rings, bracelets - to this day they are pleasing to the eye :)))) it is relatively not expensive and I took it for gifts

where to visit: if you take a car, you can travel around the whole island and see. This is perhaps the most interesting.
In my opinion, must-visit - Santorini, Rethymno, Heraklion, Samaria. Although, the whole island itself is very interesting. The only thing you should not go to the cave of Zeus. You won't see anything special there.
What to bring?! olive oil (Cretan), olive cosmetics, as well as Apivita cosmetics (sold in pharmacies). You can bring Greek wine, local sweets. As well as local honey and of course spices. I also bring magnets as gifts (but this is the standard).

A visit to the cave of Zeus is a must! In addition to the cave, see the mountain beauties and the Lasithi plateau.

Good afternoon!
For the first acquaintance with Crete, you can suggest visiting the cities of Rethymnon, Heraklion (city center + archaeological museum), Agios Nikolaos and Elounda, as well as the Cretan Aquarium (near Gouves).
What to bring: olive oil; thyme honey; olives / olives; homemade bells that are hung around the neck of goats grazing in the mountains; a variety of Greek cosmetics and olive soap.
I will be in Crete 20.06-11.07.2013
I offer individual excursions around the island by car (group up to 4 people). I also conduct a walking tour of the city of Agios Nikolaos (sights, where and what is better to buy, eat, swim).
Payment within reasonable limits, taking into account your wishes. Prices will be much lower than those offered by the hosts for similar trips, and you will get much more pleasure, because all excursions will be just for you :)))
P.S.:
I will be happy to answer your questions about Crete!!!

As for Samaria, I would say so. If you have experience of long or mountain hikes, this is a very beautiful place and you should definitely see it (there is no exit along the road, you will have to go about 15 km up and down until you exit through a narrow gorge all the time under the sun), if not, it will be difficult (I went to the Libyan Sea with terrible legs, but I really wanted to get there, so I don’t regret it). It seems that there is an easier option from the Libyan Sea (smaller in length), but there you will have to return to the sea).
About the Lasithi plateau (where Zeus's cave) I agree with lanos: you need to go. But it seems that it would be better by car, and not with a tour, because. on the plateau it would be nice to stop to look around, but this is not included in the tour. It is wet in the cave (I did not take this into account - the white trousers became dirty). First there will be a steep ascent, then a steep descent. Calculate your strength. Or you have to ride a donkey.
It was interesting for me on an excursion to Gortyn-Matale, on the way they visit the still functioning monastery (it is modern, but there are old Byzantine churches on the territory).
You can even go to an evening of Cretan songs and dances. Well, a typical tourist show. But on the way we stopped at an old Byzantine monastery. Murals... beauty

About Santorini. If you want to go to the excavations or go to the museum (and there is something to see there), you have to go not for one day. They don’t take you to the excavations at all (the other end of the island), and you may not have time to visit the museum after a sightseeing tour. I just do not advise you to go on an excursion around the volcano. If you look from afar (from ferries or reconciliation) - very tempting. But up close - a depressing sight: garbage floats around. The children, of course, rushed to swim in the sea (the entrance to the sea is not from the shore, but directly from the boat on which you will sail), but it’s not clear to me how their parents allowed them

I tried local wine in Santorini and brought it with me. Olive oil cosmetics are really good

IR-ina, there was an excursion to the excavations last year (TO Biblio Globus). As the guide explained, one day they are taken to the beach, the other day - to the archaeological complex. Didn't regret it at all. Very interesting. So if there is a choice between visiting the beach and excavations, then I would recommend the second.

Arrived only today from Crete, rested in Malia. By car, you can travel around the entire island. If there's a great bus combination without a car, I can reset the schedule. We ordered excursions to Santorini (mandatory), to the cave of Zeus (interesting, but nothing special). They themselves went to Heraklion to the Palace of Knossos - they were not impressed, they were also in Agios Nicholas - an insanely beautiful town, they took an excursion to the island of Spinelonga (Pts liked it). Everywhere everything is available in Russian (booklets are given). It is better to go by yourself and slowly enjoy your vacation!
If you have any questions, please contact. The latest reviews of ladies about Crete. I brought olive oil, cosmetics, olives, honey, delicious cheese and feta with me)))
