The airport .
Hello ! I am planning a vacation on Crete in August There were questions. Tell me how busy the airport is as they say (queues for 2-3 hours for check-in at departure?). Maybe some advice: how to avoid negative moments during arrival and return. Another opinion is whether to go to Crete in August or choose another Greek island

Hello! One can only guess about the workload of the airport - how lucky you are! The airport is small - there are not many flights. Perhaps when several depart or arrive at once and there are long waits. We arrived the only ones and immediately - after 10-15 minutes we already received the luggage. Flying away, we were not the first to arrive - there was a queue, but it moved quickly. Perhaps when tour groups are brought in advance, and you have to wait a long time for departure. And so - all according to the standard.

Fly in August to Crete. We were there last summer from 20 July to 1 August. On the islands, unlike the mainland, it is cooler. The heat is practically not felt, if you do not fry at noon on the beach, but wait in the coolness of the hotel room. I advise the Bella-Vista hotel in Bali (Balion). Very comfortable, cool, clean. The hosts Larisa and Alexander are very caring and hospitable. They can meet and escort. And also take them on interesting excursions from their own travel agency. There is a big bay in Bali. Calm warm sea - even at 8 am.

Being busy isn't the worst thing. We arrived in Heraklion on May 10 and with a baby stood at the pass for more than 2 hours, then we also sat on the bus for more than an hour, because one of our girls lost things. On the way back, the line was just crazy, but the representative of the millennium said that according to their rules, families with children under one year old are served out of turn and we can say that we were carried away. But all this is such trifles compared with the rest itself. In my opinion, a good hotel and weather are much more important.

Of course, there are other islands of Greece: economical Rhodes and Kos, calm - Thassos, Europeanized Corfu and elite Mykonos and Santorini. But Crete is often the most economical of all.

Don't worry: queues, if any, tend to move very quickly. Upon arrival in Heraklion, we defended for about 20 minutes (literally another plane landed in front of us), and when we left, it was about 30 minutes. If you immediately tune in to the presence of a queue, then it turns out without negative points.

waiting and queues at airports is a frequent and familiar phenomenon, wherever and from where you fly :-) and even where you can do without a queue, "our" people will create it. so don't worry about it at all, just be prepared.
about Crete: the sea is very restless, so choose hotels with beaches in quiet bays - this is a more important point than the queue at the airport.

We had no problems with arrival or departure. The only thing this airport has is a feature: first you need to check in for a flight, get a boarding pass, weigh your luggage, and you need to check in your luggage at other counters, standing in line again. I also didn’t like the duty free of the Heraklion airport - the distance between the racks is very small, people with hand luggage, baskets, carts, crowds, crush, it’s not convenient.
I liked the climate of the island, a pleasant place.

have a good holiday :-) Crete is a great choice! I'm sure you won't regret it)
it is convenient and not expensive to travel around the island on your own, for this it is not even necessary to take a car. there is a quiet rest, and parties, and good shopping, and interesting places)

I don’t agree with shopping, you need to know the places, otherwise you can buy any “g” incomprehensibly how and where it is stitched. See ... perhaps, but it’s highly advertised, my husband and I have been to many places and I’ll say that Crete for those who have not been to Italy, Vietnam, Thailand, Montenegro, and the Crimea (in terms of nature and all sorts of attractions) is much more interesting than Crete .. .But of course you need to visit. If you are lucky with the hotel and the weather, you can have a good rest. And at the expense of looking, do not listen to the guide and feel free to rent a car or just a group tour not from a tour operator (and cheaper, and possibly better) but at any agency right on the street. Have a good rest!

Thanks again to everyone for the replies and advice. I decided that I was flying to Crete (: I am considering the Stella Palace hotel. (It seems that the bay and the sea are calmer there)

The best thing at this time of the year was to fly to Alexandrupol. I don’t know if there are tours and charters there this year, there were - at the Labyrinth.
In general, it is calm, spacious, without the noise and din of the tourist ...
