What to see in Crete without a car?
Hello, we can't rent a car. We will live on Crete in Amoudara. Please advise where you can go by bus, so as not to take too long. And is it possible to get to Balos bay and Ellafonisi beach by regular bus, how long will the journey take in this case?
And what is the cheapest way to get to Mykonos and Santorini?

By bus, you can easily drive around the cities of Crete: to the east - Heraklion and Agios Nikolaos, to the west - Rethymnon and Chania. Knossos is very close from Heraklion, I also think buses go there from Heraklion, and a taxi will probably not be expensive ( there, in my opinion, 4 kilometers from the highway). Very close to Heraklion are the water park (Anopolis village) and the Cretan aquarium. Also, it seems to me, you can easily get from Heraklion to Matala. I would not consider the option with Balos and Elafonisi if I were you. Both are very far away. There is no normal road to Balos either. Ferries go to Santorini, but the fare, in my opinion, is about 80 euros per person (timetables and prices are on the Internet). So you won't be able to get there cheaply. I have not heard anything about ferries to Mykonos. Here is the bus schedule for you:

You can also rent bicycles in Crete. It may come in handy for exploring the nearby villages;) I would also advise you to go somewhere inland, south of Ammoudara, just drop into some non-tourist village: drink coffee, see how the Greeks live, go to the local church) ))

You won’t get to Elafonisi except by taxi, but Balos and taxis are questionable, as the driver will not want to ruin his car. There really is no ice road. 12 km, which you need to drive on a dirt road, you pass in an hour. But not to visit these places in Crete means not to visit Crete at all. Alternatively, take a bus to Kissamos. From there in the morning excursion boats leave for Balos.
Balos is the most unique place in Crete (Purely my opinion)

Thanks for the answers and the bus schedule. And if you take an excursion to Elafonisi at an agency in Chania?
As I understand it, from Crete to Chania in three hours you can easily get by regular bus.

If you take an excursion, then it makes sense for you to do it in your own Ammoudara or Heraklion. But I will tell you from my own experience: when we were in Crete for the first time, we also wanted to see everything, regardless of the distances. And having left, we realized that we would come here more than once and it makes sense to look at nearby sights))) Your beach around the corner can be no worse than the same Elafonosi)))

There are 2 Ammoudars, one near Herakleion, the second near Agios Nikolos. If near Herakleion, then to Herakleon on foot, we walked along the sea to the Vinitian fortress and along the road. Buses run there in all directions. You can get to Herakleion-Knossos Palace, you can go to Rethymnon or Chania without leaving Ammoudara. In Rethymno there are sightseeing trains deep into the island, where you can enjoy both the picturesque mountain ranges and the real Cretan flavor. you just need to leave in the morning, because The journey takes 3-4 hours. there are many routes, one of them is Pikri, with a stop in the famous Arcadia ... there are many travel agencies, figure out where it will go on the spot)) have a good rest!

Thank you! We will be in Amoudara, which is next to Heraklion. I would like the best route to Elafonisi and Balos Bay. And how much will an excursion from Heraklion to Elafonisi cost approximately? And isn’t it cheaper to take a regular bus to Chania, and from there take an excursion to Elafonisi?

well, it's not so close. maybe a little cheaper it will cost under its own power. we didn’t get to Elafonisi) I highly recommend an excursion or on your own to Santorini (you can buy ferry tickets on your own). If possible, then spend the night there. perishing very beautiful there sunsets orange-pink. white doll houses with blue roofs, bird's-eye view. Excursions are different there, sometimes with swimming on the beaches in the black sands, sometimes at the very crater ... where the sea is saturated with iron

On the bay of Balos - I agree with tourexpert. By bus to Kissamos, and then with a boat trip (visit Gramvousa at the same time). As for the excursion to Ellafonisi, I won’t say for sure, because. I have never been on any excursions in Crete. But you can just go to Chania, it will not work with a tour - look at the city. He is cooler than Elafonisi ;) Although my subjective opinion...

Hmm, if I didn’t usually rent a car, I would just take a couple of excursions from the host, they usually tell you in detail where they take you on the way to the hotel

rent bikes, ride steam locomotives and take a couple of group tours.
