I can’t say anything about the hotel beach, but if you swim in the city of Agios Nikolaos itself, go to Kitroplateia beach (it is located in a bay, and waves are very rare there). Gasoline this year, I think it will cost 1.8-1.9 euros / liter. If you want to see Crete, take a car for at least 1-2 days!

But if you walk about 20 minutes along the road, there will be a nice beach and, in my opinion, there was sand and a gentle entrance. There is no village as such nearby, so there is nowhere to go. Look it up on google maps, you should be able to see it...
