It is better to take excursions and a car not in a hotel - it is much cheaper. We rented a car in Holiday cars - everything went fine and without problems, we drove to Rethymnon and along the coast. The roads are excellent, Rethymno is a very beautiful town! Greeks drive like crazy! We went to Heraklion on our own by bus - a one-way ticket - 1.10 euros. Bus number 1 and 6 - stop opposite, bus every 20 min. until late at night. Shopping is mediocre. But, there is an opportunity to buy excellent shoes - I was lucky to buy 2 pairs of leather over the knee boots for 40 euros (for those ladies who have problems finding shoes for a very wide or very narrow ankle - you will definitely find it! ). Husband bought leather moccasins of excellent quality. Souvenirs bought in Ammudar - a large selection. The oil was purchased cheaper than it was in duty free - 1 euro per liter, but nice. Store hours are specific - do not forget about the siesta! Unusual for us! We had a BB, dined in taverns. The cuisine is super, the prices are excellent - the average check for two is 40 euros (grill + seafood + salads, with alcohol and tips) We liked the cozy tavern entwined with greenery. with checkered tablecloths and a cute barker grandfather 5 minutes walk from the hotel. Please note that dinner usually stretches for 2 - 2.5 hours - the service is VERY slow everywhere. There are also many souvenir shops, bars and free WiFi on the other side. The overall impression is pleasant. We spent a lot of time outside the hotel. Oh yes, I completely forgot - some Russians complained that they were not understood - it would be very difficult without English. Everyone knows English there - from the hotel staff to passers-by on the street - they will answer all questions without any problems! I hope this review will come in handy for those who want to relax! Good luck!
Hotel and territory
Now the hotel is no longer called Candia Maris, but Movenpick Resort. At the end of last year, it was bought out, if I'm not mistaken, by the Swedes. The rooms are very cozy and comfortable, good repair, new, comfortable furniture. We had a Superior room with a sea view, but they are no different from the standard ones. Is that the proximity to this very sea. A view of the sea, although there is a side view from ALL rooms.
When we arrived at about one in the morning, we were served in the room for 3 dinner, which we were pleasantly surprised at.
The room has a safe, telephone, TV (plasma or LSD), refrigerator, air conditioning - working at any time convenient for you and completely silently), if it's cold from the air conditioner, then there is a huge fan on the ceiling - also a handy thing. The beds are excellent, the linen is white. In the bathroom we had a shower, and in some. rooms - baths.
And one more thing - in the bathroom there was a large magnifying mirror that rotates in all directions and you can see all, all, all flaws in it.
The territory of the hotel is quite large. Minus - a little greenery. In some catalogues, it was written that there are rooms overlooking the garden...but we did not find this garden : )
Everywhere is very clean and comfortable. 24-hour security guards the order very diligently. The hotel staff does not even worry about the fact that there are towels left in the towel booth, that the kids club is open even at night and all the toys are available there at any time of the day.
On the territory there is a shop (open until 22:00) and a tavern (until 23:00)
Number
I have listed the number above. The balcony is big enough. It has wicker furniture - a sofa, an armchair and a table. Also a huge pot of flowers. In the evenings it was great to sit on the balcony, breathe in the sea air, drink tea...
By the way, the kettle was also in the room, and during the cleaning every day we were given bags of tea, coffee, regular sugar, as well as a sweetener for diabetics.
Service, staff
The staff at the hotel is very friendly. Service at the highest level, the attitude towards all tourists is good. Cleaned in the rooms every day, very high quality. Not once in 14 days was there such a thing that instead of 3 towels they put 2, or even forgot to change. Every day they put shampoo, conditioner, shower gel and always moisturizing body milk in the bathroom.
Food, restaurant
The food is excellent, the restaurant is also good. Even for me (I am a very picky eater) almost all dishes were delicious. A wide variety of meat dishes - and pork, and veal, chicken, turkey, rabbit, lamb, even suckling pig was. The meat is also cooked in different ways - both fried and boiled, and shish kebab, and with sauces ...You can't count everything.
Also fish and cheese - a great variety and for every taste. The chef will always tell you what sauce to take for which fish to make it yummy! Shrimp every day and also cooked differently. Salmon, trout, sardines, herring and more. etc. Every day there were mussels and some other "shells" (I don't understand them, but people ate).
Every day the restaurant prepares several national cuisines: necessarily Greek and standard European, and as an addition - Italian, French, Turkish and Japanese!
Care is felt in everything - even plates - for hot dishes are given warmed up so that the food does not cool down quickly, and those for sweets and fruits are cold.
The waiters are fast and very friendly. They do not know Russian (except for thank you, bon appetit, etc. phrases), but everyone speaks English fluently.
There is one Russian-speaking waiter Alexei, who is called to help in serving those tourists who, apart from Russian and the language, cannot explain anything.
Almost every day in the restaurant was quiet "live" music.
Beach, sea, pool
The beach is nice, clean, fine sand. The sea is beautiful, the bottom is sandy, there are no stones and hedgehogs. Walking along the coast and in one direction and the other from the hotel - we did not see anything better. True, all 2 weeks, not once the sea was completely calm, the waves were every day. Rescuers are on duty from 10 am to 6 pm, then they raise a red flag, which means that you can’t swim, and if you already swim, then answer for yourself.
We took a catamaran on the beach - 17 euros for 1 hour. Sunbeds and umbrellas are always and everywhere (both by the sea and by the pools) enough, you don’t need to take them in advance at all. The sunbeds are very comfortable - not plastic, but fabric, near the pool - wicker.
A pool bar is open from morning until 9 pm.
Entertainment, animation
Animation and disco is absent at all. For me it was a positive factor - around the silence and tranquility. Who wanted fun - went to the neighboring "Neptune" or "Agapi Beach". But the conditions for sports are super: an excellent gym, swimming pool, sauna, hammam. The best thalassotherapy center on the coast. A subscription to a sports club costs 45 euros for 6 days or just 10 euros per day.
Conditions for recreation with children
For children there is a kids club. Until 18 o'clock. there someone is working with them, and from 18 you can play there on your own with your child: toys, crayons, pencils, drinking filtered water - all this is available around the clock. There is also a playground with a slide and swings. There is a children's pool and a paddling pool for the little ones.
A large slide, which is in the photo in many catalogs, was removed this year.
They don’t have a special children’s menu, but the hotel staff is also helpful in this: if you have small children, you can get the necessary food in the restaurant and arrange for the waiter to bring it to your room, because the child cannot eat according to the restaurant’s schedule.
Summary
We were very pleased with our vacation. If we go to Crete again, we will choose only this hotel.
I don't recommend taking any tours. We took only the "Cretan Evening", paid 51 euros per person, but not only didn't show us anything interesting, but didn't tell us anything. Everyone with whom we talked about excursions had the same impressions.
We rented a car in front of the hotel for 3 days. It was a 2008 Opel Corsa, brand new, even with us numbers were hung on it. At the hotel, the guide for the same period cost 200 euros, on the street we took it for 126 - also with full insurance. Gasoline costs about 1.4 euros / liter.
In 3 days we traveled most of the island, saw the sights (before that we bought a guide book at the hotel for 10 euros), visited wonderful beaches, mountains, gorges, villages, in general, we had a lot of fun. The roads there are excellent, though it seems that the rules of the road. movement regarding the speed, except for me, no one observed. I really liked the trip to Elounda - beautiful places.
Juices freshly squeezed for free. The restaurant is not open all the time - breakfast, lunch, dinner. During breaks - there is a bar near the pool, which is open until late. The food is really good! Very good themed evenings (once a week) - just some kind of holiday!
Themed restaurants by appointment, we recorded our grandmother there once - we liked it. Some imported drinks are also included - Belize, cognacs. Service is top notch. They respond to all requests (although not as quickly as we would like, but nothing happens in Crete with a bullet).
Animation in three languages, among which there is no Russian. Children's town and kids club are good, but designed for bigger kids (ours was 2 years old) - games, drawing. Water slides are in very moderate demand - vacationers are mostly over twenties and there is no queue for slides.
There was enough space on the beach for everyone, but we were before the high season - our vacationers preferred the pool. By the way, hedgehogs come across in the water (even though they are struggling with them) - it’s very unpleasant to step on - I recommend taking slippers. There are corts. There is an indoor swimming pool in the same building with a Turkish bath and sauna.
Among the vacationers there were many Germans, British, French. There are few of us - mostly families with children. Of the shortcomings - the hotel is chic, but it costs "one in the field. " Those. outside some incomprehensible wastelands. I would like more civilization.
I recommend it as a family vacation or if someone wants to take thalassotherapy courses - there is a good center there.
I am a lover of seafood, so I was pleased with their daily abundance, and in various forms. As for the animation, it's rather weak. Shows were held every day except Mondays, and discos are not frequent, so you had to stay away from the hotel.
The hotel is very good for athletes, because there is a well-equipped gym, but for a fee. The one that is included in the All inclusive system is very poor.
The beach is basically normal, I did not like the fact that it is not fenced off, so everyone goes there who have absolutely nothing to do with the hotel.
And if in general, this hotel is not for young people, because.
it is quite boring there, but for respectable ladies and gentlemen who love silence, tallaso therapy and good food. And also for couples, because it’s just wonderful for children there: food, slides, an indoor warm pool, and a miniclub.
We rested "out of season", so there was no fruit (there is a better choice in the nearest supermarket and even in Moscow), no fish and almost nothing worked in the hotel (shops, sports, etc. ), there was practically no entertainment either.
Among other shortcomings, poor landscaping (several stunted trees on a rather large territory) and evening locking of the gate to the beach: if you want to take a walk by the sea in the evening, you need to go around in the dark, along the potholes). But overall the hotel is good.
