Is it possible to fly with a passport with an old surname?
USA
I want to fly to the states, but I recently got married and changed my last name. In the old one there is a visa received earlier. Will there be any problems if I fly with an old passport?

There will be problems in the States, no options. This is not Turkey and Egypt, and not even the Schengen countries. Change your passport.
аватар Murmurmur
And what are the problems?????
аватар sigur62
Yes, none at all. They just won't let you into the country.
аватар Murmurmur
Well, why not let something? Explain, do they have our cop bases? How do you know this? Did you personally have precedents?
аватар sigur62
Dear, I personally didn’t have it, thank God. My friends knew something similar when flying to England, and as they later explained, the services of the United States and England are equally picky in these matters. if everything goes clean, then there are no problems, the passport is not expired, the photo on the passport and on the visa is yours, the ticket is apparently also for this passport. But... suddenly there may be some doubts about the time gap between check-in and departure, up to whether you have relatives in the Middle East or problems with law enforcement agencies. And you are not there at all ... Then, you yourself understand ... But in general, try it, maybe you will slip through, you will probably even slip through. The main thing is that there, in the States, everything works out without problems for you, so that they do not make requests to ours from there. Good luck!

Thanks for the detailed answer.

"But ... suddenly there may be some doubts about the time gap between check-in and departure, up to whether you have relatives in the Middle East or problems with law enforcement agencies"
However:) Visa is checked upon arrival! What is the time between check-in and departure? At check-in, they simply check its (visa) availability and ask if you yourself packed your suitcase, if you are carrying something prohibited (this is just for a flight to England).
As for the US visa: it does not give the right to enter the country at all, but only the right to fly there and apply for permission to enter the visa officer, it is he who determines the possibility and duration of your stay. That's what he personally gets into his head to check - no one can predict.
On the website of the US Embassy regarding passports, it is written that if the passport expires earlier than the visa, then it is possible to travel with two passports - a new one and an old one with a stamped visa, there is no need to rearrange. I think that it is better for you to call the embassy and clarify, maybe there is a similar practice when changing a surname.

Even last year, the same practice existed when crossing the Finnish border. For those who traveled often, the pages in the passport ended earlier than the visa, so the Finns were allowed to travel with two passports: the last one had a visa, and the new one had border crossing stamps. Since this year it has been banned, the passport has ended - stomp for a new visa. Here it is better to find out from American friends directly.

When changing your last name, you need to change your passport within 3 months and reopen the visa at the embassy already in the new passport

I know what I need to do with my passport!!!
The question is different!
аватар HotLine
The US visa officer cannot know if you are married or not. Even the Russian border guards do not know this. Moreover, they cannot know which surname you have decided to choose for family life. Maybe you decided not to change it.
Neither the Russian border nor the American border have the right to demand any additional documents. True, Pachok wrote correctly - a visa "does not give the right to enter the country." But with a valid passport and a valid visa, you are no different from any other woman crossing the US border.
Unless, of course, you are not a citizen of Belarus. But then the problems will be before the American border.
аватар Murmurmur
Thank you very much for your constructive response! And the fact that a visa does not give the right to enter is, of course, understandable)
аватар sigur62
HotLine, intrigued, and what problems await the citizens of Belarus, explain? It will come in handy to know. Thank you.

in their foreign passports, which they also have internal, they put stamps in the registry office about the invalidity of the passport

Here I am writing a report about how I flew to the states on my passport. My husband and I went through passport control together (only married people can go through this way, and everyone else one at a time). The officer asked my husband who I was, he answered his wife. Then he asked me to put my hand on the scanner and ..... that's it !!!!! He didn't ask me anything at all! So, with regard to such cases as mine, then fly boldly and do not be afraid of anything! They do not have such a base (by changing surnames), and ours, respectively, too. Yes, and the visa was received from me a year ago (for two years) and never opened. Good luck to all!

And I also wanted to write specifically for sigur62
If you are not competent in the matter, then DO NOT give any comments!

For the respected Purr. You were just given an example from the experience of visiting other countries. You were also advised "... it is better to find out directly from American friends" (quote two months ago). Here is another one, not mine anymore: "... You'd better call the embassy and clarify..." (Pachok). So no one is misleading you.
The fact that everything worked out perfectly for you at passport control is good, and your experience in this situation will be useful to many, thank you.
Good luck and happy travels!

I honestly didn't want to get into a discussion with you. I think it will not be difficult for you to read your first and second comments again, but judging by this comment, it will be, then I quote for you: "There will be problems in the States, no options. This is not Turkey and Egypt and not even the Schengen countries. Passport change." And to my question what specific problems may arise, you unfoundedly declare "Yes, actually, none. Only they will not be allowed into the country." Is this misleading????
But then you wrote about someone else's experience in another country!
аватар sigur62
Once again I will repeat. I am very glad that everything went well for you. I hope my advice did not create problems for you when crossing the border. Contact and unforgiving people usually do not have problems in any country. May good luck accompany you in the future.
аватар HotLine
in the list of documents for a visa there are no certificates of contact and memory status. If this country is not called "paradise"
аватар sigur62
Good clarification. Offset!
