Well, Izmir is not a place, but a huge city - about 3 million people, I drove through it for almost two hours by car. But a little north of Kusadasi (amazing Pamucak beach), and to the south (Davutlar, Guzelcamli) you can find a good place to relax , and Selçuk, where the remains of Ephesus are located very close.

Choose Kusadasi (more precisely, one of the villages next to them) as a "base", from there you can get to Izmir by minibuses / buses, and to Ephesus and Pamukkale. Look at the Grand Efe Hotel in Ozdere, it is cheap, but not bedbug and stands right on the sea - the first line. If there will not be a children's camp there this year - an excellent economical option.
Booking.com is not suitable for Turkey - one of the most expensive options, look better on British and German sites.

I am for Bulgaria. I recommend Sozopol. Old town, normal sea, low prices. And if you get bored - other interesting cities and places are within easy reach, we traveled everywhere on a regular bus for ridiculous money.
