What is Istanbul in January?
I'm going to go to Istanbul in January 2009. Well, I really wanted to see the city. In the summer it is a pity to spend days by the sea. How is the weather there? Are there many tourists at this time? Are city hotels different from resort areas? Please answer, thank you!

It is better to go in spring or autumn. In winter, I do not advise, because in January in Istanbul it is very damp, cold and windy, it can even pile up with snow up to the waist, and the local equipment is not suitable for snow removal.

I agree - it's terribly cold there! A bunch of people - Russian speech is heard everywhere. It's not always tourists though. Hotels are mostly typical for the city: without a balcony, there is central heating. In some of them, unmarried couples are not accommodated together.

I have been going to Istanbul in winter for 5 years, just at different times, sometimes on New Year's Day, sometimes on St. Valentine's Day. Hotels are very different, plus the difference is very noticeable depending on the area of the city. Basically, I stay in hotels in the immediate vicinity of Taksim Square, there is a good infrastructure, there are indoor pools, and plus everything is at hand - famous brands stores, city center, restaurants, bars, disco, etc.
Regarding the weather, it is different every time, it can even change during the day. Once we walked in light windbreakers, and the next day we pulled on hats and warm jackets. It is better to go in the spring, somewhere in April or now (September-October).

We went to Turkey for the new year. Thanks, simple! Winter in Turkey is not winter - lemons sway on the branches, everything is green, the sky is ultra blue. On vacation, even colored nightmares began to dream - the brain could not stand the abundance of colors after the Moscow winter dullness. At the airport (already at the airport, mind you!) we got drunk on the fresh air filled with the aroma of the southern (!) night. Okay, these are emotions. Now, in essence: During the day the temperature is 15 degrees, in the sun it is not higher than 18. But in the evening, at 8-9 o'clock, it is already about zero. The Moscow coat was very useful to me. And the scarf too. Warm clothes are a must.
If you live in a hotel, do not take a bungalow - it is impossible to undress there, you can sleep in a coat. (at least we did, so they demanded the main building, there with heating without problems).
In conclusion, I will add - some rabid people even swam in the sea - they got into the water and were dumbfounded there.
In general, I really liked the "winter" Turkey!
Impressions are pleasant for a lifetime. I will go again in winter!

Dasha 105, the question was about Istanbul, and you are probably talking about the Mediterranean coast. It's pretty far apart...

In Istanbul in the winter was 5 times on the sensations of Moscow autumn. Excursions in full volume except for sea ones. The trees are green. Got caught in the snow once. In this connection, there were difficulties with the flight, we sat on the plane for 6 hours (maybe we were waiting for the snow to melt?) It was not very pleasant. To visit Istanbul, it is better to choose spring or autumn.

Thanks for answers. I realized that it is cold there, although I myself am from Siberia, I am not afraid. There is simply no time in spring or autumn, holidays are only in January.
I'll probably still get it..

Was in Tsambul for the new year. it all depends on the weather. During the day it can be +18 and +3. But very often there is a cold sea wind .. and then it becomes very cold. But in general, for visiting the city, this time is quite suitable.
