Actual questions about staying in Asia: flight, transport, currency exchange, food / water, security.
Good evening, dear forum users.
Finally, my dream came true and we are going on a small independent tour of Asia. Our route is: Singapore-Phuket-Bangkok. I would like to clarify with experienced tourists some questions about staying in Asia, or rather: what to wear / take on such a long flight, what to do during a connection in the UAE, where is it better to change currency and are there any pitfalls in this matter, where eat safely and how to generally try to protect yourself from any kind of excesses. We know English, so we hope that there should not be any special problems. But this is the first time I personally fly so far, so I would like to prepare)) Thank you for your help!

I am in Thailand: it is better to change the currency at the bank branches. But, when you arrive from Singapore, you will already need baht for a taxi, so the first hundred c.u. change at the airport. Why a hundred - in Thailand, a different rate when exchanging different banknotes.
How long is the docking in the UAE? Sometimes we only had time to run to the boarding gate, and sometimes we could go shopping and drink coffee.
On the flight we take (we put on right away) comfortable shoes and a pair of tight socks for throwing away so that you can take off your shoes and your feet do not freeze and you can put them on the floor, trousers are not tight and not tight, a sports jacket or a knitted cardigan with a hood. Normal airlines give out blankets on long flights, and aircraft are equipped with multimedia systems in the headrests of the seats. If there is a segment at UIA, then that's it - you only need to take care of comfort yourself :(
If you have any special food requirements - take everything with you at UIA, on normal airlines, when booking tickets, there is a choice of food options.

Where to eat in Thailand - different tourists have different opinions. But the more times people have been to this country, the more often you can hear from them - muffins and inexpensive "canteens". We ourselves prefer street food there. It is tasty, safe and cheap. They do not have the concept of "yesterday's dish" in their culture, they cooked - they ate. Moreover, they prepared a specific portion. If you want a cultural atmosphere - a cafe is more expensive, you can go to a restaurant. - The food there will not differ, but napkins, tablecloths, air conditioning will create a pleasant mood. What I can warn against - from foreign and "Russian" establishments. The only time we got sick was after visiting a bar owned by an American. How to determine a good place - by occupied tables. If you have to wait in line to sit down, or you have to stand in line at the macaroon for food, these are the best places to eat.

About safety in Thailand. I want to draw your attention to the fact that Thai men and Thai women are so different in character and mentality that I would generally classify them as different nations :) Women are friendly, calm, friendly. Even if she doesn’t like something, she will smile, albeit falsely. Thais - on the contrary, suspicious, rogue, if something is wrong, they become simply wild. Yelling, can provoke a fight. Don't argue with male drivers. Even if a taxi driver or a tuk-tuk driver tries to steal more than the agreed amount, sometimes it's easier to give and forget than to deal with the police and prove that you did not rob the poor thing. The police in Thailand are ALWAYS on the side of the locals. This is a business - to detain, scare, then, in the form of a big favor, release them for a bribe. As a way out - use only a taxi with a taxi meter. The car stops, look, ask "taxi meter?" and see if there is this very counter and if the driver's license is attached above the windshield.

I completely agree with Pachok, but I will add my five drops))
The direction of the tour is such that English is not the most important language, although it will naturally help. Pure English is generally poorly understood, except perhaps in large hotels and the airport. In all other places, the simpler and more primitive the phrase, the better. Best with English in Singapore. Although there is nothing much to do there for more than 2-3 days.
In Thailand, in tourist places, they will also understand you, but a little further from the mass tourist places you already have ingenuity, hands and emotions to help you
Take everything with you the same as in any other resort. But keep in mind that Singapore is as close as possible to your equator, the sun is terrible there. At first glance, nothing special, but in fact, even if it is cloudy, then apply sun creams to the maximum and, if possible, cover your entire body.

With food, there are no special problems in tourist areas where you plan to visit, this is not India. But try, when ordering each dish, ask to make it without pepper. Pepper will still be there, but less than if you do not ask for it.
In terms of clothing, everyone is loyal to tourists, but this does not mean that you need to dress provocatively. Ideally, clothing should cover the shoulders and knees. When visiting any temple, you will be able to take a skirt to cover your legs to the floor.
Phuket is already a resort, there is basically the usual beach rhythm.
As for currency exchange, there are no special pitfalls, just be careful and exchange in banks and exchangers, and not with your hands. In Thailand, you will encounter the option the smaller the bill, the worse the rate, so for Thailand, take everything at 100
As for the docking in the Emirates, according to the standard, it rarely exceeds 2 hours, as a rule, you don’t even have time to have a bite to eat, at best, you’ll take a walk around Dutik.

In a tuk-tuk, immediately look at the printout with tariffs and give exactly that amount (stock up on small bills), since in 90% of cases there are squabbles due to change. The calculation goes like this: you call from the back, the car stops, get out, approach the driver and hand out the money through the window. So - dozens of times I watched the driver just leave without giving change.
It was all about the bad. Now about the good - it's all the little things !!! The country is amazing, nature, animals, plants, sea! The kitchen is just amazing. Fruits! From such a trip you can and should get a lot of pleasure.

In fact, your short question can be answered - read the guidebooks, it is very difficult to describe everything in a few sentences. If you have not been to Asia, then you need to understand that the attitude towards religion and among themselves there is very different from the European understanding, but unlike the Arabs, they practically do not impose a way of behavior on you.

Pachok has already written everything about tuk-tuk and taxi. You will most likely need a taxi only in Bangkok, since it is not very comfortable to ride a tuk-tuk there. But take note. In the evening and at night, a taxi in Bangkok will no longer take you according to the meter, you will have to bargain a little. In Phuket, when getting into an empty tuk-tuk, keep in mind that if you tell where exactly you need it, then it will take you like a taxi. So just silently sit down and he will go along his route, and before the desired stop, as already mentioned, click on the bell.

Yes, another important point - considering Bangkok traffic jams, I would choose a hotel either near the sky train station, where you can get directly to the airport, or, if the flight is in the morning, I would spend the last night in one of the airport hotels. There are a lot of them, from $ 20 per room per night to ... Almost all of them include "breakfast" in the price (even if it's at three in the morning) and a shuttle to the airport, which departs from the hotel around the clock with a frequency of 30 -40 minutes.

There are no tuk-tuks in Phuket that follow the route. Taxi only! Do not confuse with Pattaya, andereyvip.

Thanks to everyone and especially Pachok and andreyvip for such detailed and useful advice.
Another special thanks to Pachok. This is not the first time you have helped us, and it was thanks to you that we ended up in Portugal and Madeira and still consider this one of our most interesting trips))
We fly to Singapore on a Flydubai/ Emirates flight and we have a docking time of about 6 hours. So there is enough time to have a bite to eat and chill in duty free.
I also wanted to ask if it makes sense to go from Phuket to the nearest islands, and if so, which ones. There are many such proposals on the Internet and we have not yet decided whether it makes sense. Please advise.
And tell me, please, some good site where you can read about the country and attractions in order to make your travel plan. Thank you!

Yes, in principle, it makes sense to go from Phuket to the nearest islands, if you like outdoor activities and allow the duration of the trip, budget and strength, the route you have already declared is saturated. And from Phuket it is worth taking excursions to the Semilan Islands (the islands are closed from May to November due to storms at sea), there are 1 and 2-day excursions, go far, more than an hour on a speedboat, plus 2 hours before that to the pier. You visit several islands, swim in the sea and bays, lunch is included, spend the night in tents (for an amateur), there are bungalows there, but they must be ordered very early on the Internet and, accordingly, 2 days more expensive. Now they still carry to the islands of Tachai and Surin, it is even further and more expensive, I would not recommend them for the first time. It is also worth visiting the excursions of Phi Phi Island and James Bond (this is closer to Phuket and there are excursions even when they do not carry to Semilans). You can take a 2-day tour and see these two islands at a time, plus the island of Krabi is included there, overnight at the hotel, lunches, dinners, etc.

Yaroslavas, thanks, it's always nice to know that your writings were useful to someone :)
As for the islands - if there is Hong Island in the proposals - don't even think about going! The nuance is that we sailed on it from Krabi, not from Phuket. If there is a tour to Krabi, it is also interesting, there are very beautiful places not on the island. The Similans somewhat disappointed me with the number of people, the dirty (oddly enough) sea and the very poor underwater world. This is not the Red Sea, but they sell a tour just like for snork lovers.
Z.Y. Krabi is not an island, it is a mainland, quite a large province.

My family and I were vacationing in Thailand in February. The route is as follows: 3 days in Phuket (Kata), 3 days on the island of Phi Phi, 3 days on the island of Ao Nang (Krabi), and therefore 3 days in Phuket (Karon) and a day in Bangkok. I really liked it when the whites on Phi Phi took a boat for 3,000 baht and sailed for 6 hours in the Andaman Sea, visited many islands, snorkeling, swimming, riding on monkey island (be sure to take food for monkeys - do not forget they can be fed with them, but it is better not to stroke their backs). While in Krabi, we visited hot springs, a national park and rode elephants. After arriving in Phuket, we went to James Bond Island. However, we were in Thailand for the second time, but there is still something to see for the third time!

helen.panina, Ao Nang is a beach and it is on the mainland. This is not an island
About 3,000 baht and 6 hours - it was a walk through the archipelago of the Phi Phi Islands, which are actually 6, not 1, as many people think. The two southernmost islands are stone cliffs without shores, which have good diving. Most likely, you have been to Yong Kasem Bay, where monkeys descend in the morning, Pi Le Lagoon, Viking Cave, Lo Sama Bay, and possibly Wang Long or Lo Lan. The two northernmost islands of the archipelago are Ko Yung and Ko Mai Phai, I don’t know if you went there or not =)
Which national park did you visit while in Krabi? =) It's just that there are also a lot of them - even the same Phi Phi islands are also part of the Khad Nopparat Thara Mu Koh Phi Phi National Park.
And about the third time, you definitely noticed - there will always be something that you have not seen and do not know =)

I warn you! If you hear "Ao Nang Island" from agencies selling excursions, run to another one :)
Ao Nang is the central beach of Krabi, besides, there is nothing to do on it, you even have to swim in other places. It makes sense to choose it as a base so that you can travel and swim everywhere from there. To go "see Ao Nang" - definitely not.
