Questions about Madeira
1. We plan to stay in Funchal. Does it make sense to break the trip into 2 parts and spend 2-3 days in Porto Moniz? Or is it enough to go there for one day?
2. In which area is it better to stay - in the very center (I liked the option next to the cathedral) or in the Lido area?

3. Porto Santo - is the ocean calm there? Is it possible to swim there normally without fear of waves?

4. 3. Are there any beaches in Madeira like the Canarian Las Teresitas, where it would be safe to sail 40-50 meters from the coast?
аватар zhdanova10
1. Porto Moniz is a tiny town. There is nothing to do there, except to relax in the aqua complex of thermal pools. Several restaurants and an aquarium (very primitive). Nature, fabulous color of water - yes! Both times we left Funchal at 10 am, three hours on the road (I don’t remember exactly) and back at about 4 pm. I always wanted a little more an extra hour, but to stay for a couple of days - this was not the case. What if it rains?
2. Both times we stopped in the center - there are museums, and a funicular, and buses in all directions. We went and went to Lido, but we did not plan to live there.
3. They did not go to the island.
4. Large sandy beach - Praia Formosa - west of Funchal, there is a smaller one in Machico (east of the airport)

thank you zhdanova10

and also tell me, please, according to Machik
we are going for 16 days, of which I would like to stupidly lie down on the beach for 5-6 days
is it optimal to book a hotel in Machico for this time or is it better to travel from Funchal every day?
аватар zhdanova10
Drive far. Plus serpentines.
I would stay in Machico. The town is cute and lively. You can go to Cape San Lorenzo.

zhdanova10, thank you very much

zhdanova10, thanks again for advising Machik. it wasn't even considered at first. ended up booking 6 nights in Machico and then 10 nights in Funchal

I am also for the beach in Machico, but keep in mind that in the season there is not overcrowded. There is a shortage of beaches for swimming in Madeira, and then there is the yellow sand, everyone goes here.
From Funchal to Porto Moniz, about an hour's drive, if not around to get, but through the tunnels. It is pointless to stay there to live, here I also completely agree with zhdanova10.
Lido is an area of hotels and villas, the only place where there are signs and advertisements in Russian. For me, this is a big minus. Excursions are twice as expensive. But in Lido there is a beautiful promenade over the sea for walking and a beach where you can swim. The city center is beautiful, cozy and comfortable. The only inconvenience is that if several liners moor at the same time in the port, there are too many people.
There are also villages near Funchal. If you are considering a hotel, and not the private sector, then many of them have a free shuttle to Funchal.

And another question about Machik. Seems to be very close to the airport. but, I don’t see anywhere information on how to get there from the airport. is there any shuttle? Or book a transfer?

thank you zhdanova10
I myself looked at the schedule on this site and did not see Machika))
Can you please tell me where is the bus stop so I can see how far to go?
is she alone?
аватар camomille
Did I understand correctly that there are 3 stops in Machico. the bus descends from the mountain to the beach.
аватар zhdanova10
I know that if there is an airport stop, then the bus should call in, but when we went to Funchal, we went down to the highway. It's very close.
I would also torment the airport staff, where the stop is at Machika. They will prompt. In principle, we came from Funchal directly to the airport, under the entrance, I think that buses also come in the opposite direction. And those who do not enter, then stop on the track.
I look at Google maps that the buses that stop on the route are not at all the buses that are indicated on the site.)))
But it's all very close. Large glass passage, elevator down and over the bridge to the other side of the road.
We drove through Machica from Funchal and the bus (I don’t remember the number) stopped at the bus station. On the way back from the cape, we had already left there and walked literally three small blocks to the beach.

zhdanova10, thanks again!!!
in principle, they have a transfer from the airport costs only 16 euros for two. You can probably not even bother with the bus, which, as I understand it, costs 5 euros per person.
аватар zhdanova10
I understand that if from the track, then 1.95.
But in order not to bother, especially the first time, take a transfer. You will probably have suitcases for 16 days, not backpacks. And there already study the situation and go to Funchal by bus)
аватар camomille
we will have a small backpack and a small suitcase, which pass in the RK TAP Portugal))) but still, I don’t really want to walk on the navigator even with 10 kg of weight

We ordered a taxi on the Internet, something was quite inexpensive, I don’t remember how much :) we were driving from the airport to Canisa.
mast si, of course, peaks - Ruivu and Areiro, there is a path between them, if you wish, you can go along it, but it bakes in summer and blows away in winter :))) You need to choose the right weather. And, in general, Madeira is levadas. Different lengths, different complexity, choose according to your physical capabilities. To warm up, we walked from Ribeiro Frio to Portela, there are 11 kilometers, if I'm not mistaken, a light and pleasant levada. There is a bus to Ribeiro, there is also a regular bus downstairs in Portel.
It is a must to drive around the island through the bays. Santana, Monte, botanical garden, climb into it on teleferico booths.
In general, if you are not disgusted with organized tourism, then I recommend going to any small travel agency, only without Russian inscriptions and employees, and see what they offer. We took two excursions - for a day in the Eastern part of the island and for a day to the Western part.

There are only 6 people in the bus, including my husband and I, and the driver, who is also a guide. He showed us all the most beautiful places and nooks and crannies. I hardly spoke English, and we don't speak Portuguese :) But we understood each other perfectly. We obtained historical information from other sources, and you can show a flower or a sea in any language. And, having traveled with him, we were convinced that driving ourselves would be pretty dumb. There are such roads, turns and slopes that it is better to be a passenger :) There are also new, smooth, high-speed roads, but they are not along the coast, but most of them are in tunnels.
аватар camomille
Packok, thank you!!!
аватар zhdanova10
I agree with Pachok. Excursions to different parts of the island (total - two) and levadas (at your own choice - at least 5 or 10).
Plus the museums are nice. Delight Monte Park, orchid garden, botanical garden. Port with cruise ships, parks, churches, city holidays...
Observation room with glass floor. Banana groves. Ocean...

thank you
