The Golden Gate was one of the three great city gates built under Yaroslav the Wise. The construction of the gate together with St. Sophia Cathedral is mentioned in the "Tale of Bygone Years" in 1037. It was a battle tower with a passage, with a church above the gate. It is not known for sure what the gate looked like. Archaeological research of Kyiv began in the 1920s. The excavation of the Golden Gate was among the first. Two parallel walls were discovered, 25 meters long (eastern pylon) and 13 meters (western), and about 8 meters high.→
