The Golden Gate was one of the three great city gates built under Yaroslav the Wise. The construction of the gate together with St. Sophia Cathedral is mentioned in the "Tale of Bygone Years" in 1037. It was a battle tower with a passage, with a church above the gate. It is not known for sure what the gate looked like.

Archaeological research of Kyiv began in the 1920s. The excavation of the Golden Gate was among the first. Two parallel walls were discovered, 25 meters long (eastern pylon) and 13 meters (western), and about 8 meters high.

In April 1982, on the occasion of celebrating the 1500th anniversary of Kyiv, a pavilion in the Old Russian style was built over the ruins of the Golden Gate. Fragments of a shaft with wooden fortifications were recreated on both sides of the gate. From the south they built a double gate and a bridge. Lowering wooden lattices were recreated from the south. Inside the building there is a museum of the gate.
The Zolotovoritsky Square was arranged nearby, and much later, in 1997, a monument to Yaroslav the Wise was erected, designed by the sculptor Ivan Kavaleridze. The grand opening of the Golden Gate took place on May 20.1982.
