Dominican Monastery of St. Nicholas

Dominican Monastery of St. Mikoli
Ukraine, Kamianets-Podilskyi
The Dominican monastery in Kamyanets-Podilskyi is an architectural monument of the 16th-18th centuries, the modern image of which has evolved over several centuries under the influence of various architectural traditions. A stone Catholic church was built instead of a wooden church that burned down in 1420. In the 16th century, three chapels were added to the middle nave of the main temple of the monastery, and a stone cell was erected instead of a wooden one. During the Turkish rule in 1672-1699, the church was rebuilt into a mosque, a white-stone Muslim pulpit was installed inside, which has survived to this day, a fountain and a pulpit for Friday prayers were arranged in the courtyard.
In order to eliminate traces of the Muslim presence within the walls of the Christian shrine, under the leadership of the commandant of the fortress Jan de Witte and with the financial support of M.F. Pototsky, large-scale construction work began, which ended in 1754. The second tier of cells was built on, the buildings were connected into a single complex, a two-story house was attached to the church, where Potocki lived, the bell tower was rebuilt in the Baroque style. In Soviet times, the monastery was closed and began to collapse, and also survived the fire. In 1994, the monastery complex was handed over to the Pauline Order of the Roman Catholic Church, which began its restoration.

The Dominican monastery in Kamianets-Podilskyi was first mentioned in 1372. The church was wooden, and in 1420 it burned to the ground. New life of the monastery in the XVI century. gave the Potocki family, who cared for the Dominicans. Initially, the stone cell complex (1596) of the Dominican monastery of St. Nicholas was founded as a one-story U-shaped building with a refectory adjoining from the east, but during a major reconstruction in the middle of the 18th century, it acquired a second floor and closed space into a single perimeter. The interior, which is not distinguished by sophistication, was created according to a corridor scheme with a one-sided arrangement of services. Of the external decor, it is worth noting the decoration of the main western entrance - the coat of arms surrounded by pilasters in a triangular timan, and the arched gallery on the first floor of the eastern and southern internal facades.
