I'm answering my own question. Excursions from locals are cheaper, but not by much. It is better to take long trips from a tour operator - a Russian-speaking guide in this case is a big plus. Feel free to take excursions around the place from the locals - there is practically nothing to tell there - the main thing is to watch.
