there are very few people, and the beaches are really one of the best. The wave is small and you can always swim.

White sand? - No
Waves for swimming? - 90% of all hotels on the coast have such waves.
Sunbeds and umbrellas or natural shade from the vegetation? - No
Solitude and peace? - No
The beauty of nature and the ocean? - No

The beaches of Unawatuna are Crimea! Along the entire beach there are only sun loungers and umbrellas, a lot of people, all kinds of catamarans, bananas, tablets, scooters, wingsurfing and so on. This is a party place for young people. There are many cafes and guesthouses. once or twice and that's it. Yes, there is a lagoon there, so there are almost no waves, but I really don’t understand why you need to fly so far to swim like in the sea in Unawatuna. Sri Lanka is very beautiful and it is worth seeing a real ocean, even with waves.

We rested in Hikkaduwa, the lagoon is super and clean.
Having read, like you, reviews about Unawatuna, we decided to go and see the lagoon there - how disappointed we were! Mud, lots of locals, rocks aground, and NO white sand there!
In my album there are photos of the beach of Hikkaduwa and Unawatuna view from the top from the Buddha Temple

In November, we were in Hikkaduwa for the weekend, there were thousands of locals, an unrealistic number of people. There were many tourists in Unawatuna. The ocean is definitely better in Hikkaduwa.
But during a sunny day in Unnawatuna, the water is very beautiful, but there are no corals and turtles.

Don't listen to anyone, Unawatuna class! Lots of people on weekends when locals come to relax. And I would have looked like swimming near the hotels in a storm, but there you are!
аватар oksana_minsk1
Unawatuna is not the beach where to seek solitude - friends were brought there - I felt sorry for them, it was written correctly - if you want to go to Crimea, go to Unawatuna)). I like Mirissa - there are few people - cafes on the shore - a bit far of course. Induruva is generally a class - just not for those who need civilization - there we were alone for 2 km in both directions))). Trincomal is far away. Well, the farther from the airport, the fewer people)))

In a storm near hotels without a lagoon, everyone successfully and safely swims on the waves: they go up to their shoulders, the wave shakes up and down - this is an incomparable pleasure for adults and children.
Why fly to the ocean and swim in a quiet lagoon, like in the sea?
аватар anutamazurova
Thank you all very much! a little clearer :)
Tell me more, please, about the beach of Bentota - how is it in comparison with Hikkaduwa and Unawanunoy ??? :))
аватар anutamazurova
Is Beruwala beach worse than the above beaches??
аватар agent_borabora
Bentota is the most popular region among our compatriots, the ocean is calm, infrastructure is developed, there is a lagoon near the Vivanta by Taj hotel;
Beruwala - the confluence of a large river, a calm ocean, a gentle approach, developed infrastructure, a Muslim settlement, without alcohol, the newest Cinnamon Bay hotel, opened in 2013.

anutamazurova- and you write what you want to get from the rest. I needed peace and quiet - I chose deserted beaches and quiet hotels and guessed it. Someone needs a good rest with communication and evening entertainment. Therefore, write what you want and they will definitely advise you. How I envy you that you are just studying everything and getting ready for the trip - I so want to return to Sri Lanka again .......
аватар anutamazurova
From the rest I want beautiful, clean (preferably) beaches with palm trees (not necessarily completely secluded, but definitely not crowded) we are going on a honeymoon :))

but at the same time I would like evening entertainment) And on excursions, as I understand it, we will be able to get almost the same time from all the western and southern towns?
The choice has so far narrowed down to Bentota, Hikkaduwa and Beruwala. But I can't really decide between them! just like with hotels!
аватар anutamazurova
And besides, we will go out of season either in August or in September-October. Therefore, I want to choose a place where the ocean will be more or less calm at this time, lagoons or bays covered with reefs .. chtoli

We went in December - the ocean was normal everywhere - maybe because I swim well and the waves don’t scare me especially, as many people write in the reviews. The entrance to both Mirissa and Induruwa is 50 meters deep into the ocean - and everything is waist-deep for you)). We had a 5 minute tuk tuk ride from our hotel in Induruwa to Bentota. I was considering a hotel that was near the river in Bentota and was embarrassed that there would be dirt after the rains. so here you need to read the reviews, but there are a lot of people there, of course. I can send a photo of the beaches where I was to the post office, but I don’t file something in my account - the volume is probably large. You are wrong about excursions - here you need to go straight to the airport - and then rest.
аватар anutamazurova
It's clear)) well, it's great that there are not many people)
I swim well too, I'm not afraid of the waves themselves. But I never swam in the ocean and read reviews that during the waves it "pulls" there
аватар cgistalker
I would say the opposite, I was pushed ashore during the waves)))
аватар agent_borabora
Swimming in the ocean is really tricky: it pulls in and pushes out at the same time. At the very shore, the waves are thrown ashore, and if you sail away, the ocean draws you deeper.
Beaches with palm trees in Lanka will be in any region. But the beaches of Bentota, Beruwala and Hikkaduwa are among the most crowded. But there will be evening entertainment.
In Lanka, you can get one thing: either a secluded beach with no entertainment at night, or a crowded one with numerous cafes. Lanka is definitely not a party place; outside the hotel, nightlife is not developed.
Tip: choose a hotel with an evening program, and then look at the beach.

Excursions are really from all regions at the same price. The road trip to Sigiriya or Kandy one way takes an average of 7 to 10 hours from the southwest coast. If you want to see all the sights, it is better to settle in Kandy after arrival and watch everything interesting from there, and finish your vacation on the coast. So time is not wasted and the hotel room on the coast is not idle. The money comes out the same.
Under your wishes, I would consider the Hikkaduwa region:
- the beach is closed by reefs;
- a tame turtle lives;
- developed infrastructure, there is a place to go, everything is nearby;
The best choice of hotels: Lanka Supercorals 2+, Citrus 3, Chaya Tranz 4.

Thank you very much for your advice! :)
Yes, 7-10 hours is a lot .. we will consider the option in order to first stop in the center of the island. Only now I don’t know how to decide on a tour then, I thought about ordering through a travel agency, but is it possible to book one hotel for several days, and then another .. Or is it better to book hotels, etc. on one's own? advise)

We rested in the low season (June), the first week was generally wild - there were at most 8 people on the entire beach from the tourists, the locals came on weekends, but they swam "in their own bunch" in the distance. A lot of vacationers came for the second week, but still there was enough space. Regarding the distances to the sights - I agree, far away. Therefore, we took an excursion for 6 days (they agreed there in Unawatuna), but not immediately after arrival, but after resting first on the coast. After the tour, we returned to the same place.

We had contracts with hotels, and with the host on the island, and I can find the cheapest ticket, but, no matter how I thought, it was much cheaper to buy a tour from a tour operator.
The tour operator has blocks on flights at the lowest prices, plus special prices from hotels, so the tour turns out to be cheaper than organizing it yourself.
There are already group excursion tours with a program to choose from, you can also choose hotels. I can help you choose
аватар nadin65
In any travel agency in Ukraine, you can order a combined tour (several days of excursions + other days of beach vacation)
Such tours are sold by the NEWS Travel Tour Operator, you yourself can first see and choose a tour,
in the city column, mark excursions for such and such a number of days.
