It's always GOOD there.
February is the season for the western and southwestern coasts (small waves, you can swim).
99% of the hotels (sold by us) are concentrated there, you can't go wrong...
Cold in the mountains is the central part of the island.

And as far as I understand, it is NOT the season for the east side of the island...

It is February-March - the best time - and it doesn’t rain often, especially on the coast, but inland and in the mountains the temperature is slightly different and it rains (tropical showers) much more often. And choose the resort (city) yourself - what interests you more - nature, a minimum of tourists, entertainment, the ocean, etc.

Season is everywhere! Bentota, Beruwala, Hikaduwa, Galle, etc. You said it right - you should not go only to the northeast coast (Trincomalle).

Sri Lanka is a tropical island 500 km from the equator. There is no change of seasons in our understanding of "winter-summer-autumn". On the coast, the temperature of air and water is almost constant: + 28/+32 air, +27/+28 water.
Only waves can confuse - stronger during the period when monsoon winds blow, bringing rain.
But you are coming at a wonderful time for a west coast holiday: from Wadduwa all the way south - you can (and should) swim, although remember that this is the ocean.
Definitely, it worries less on the beaches covered with bays, but there are few of them (Unavtuna, Weligama, partly Hikkaduwa - after the construction of the breakwater).
But on Beruwala, Bentota, Kosgod, Koggala - a gentle descent into the water, the waves roll widely - and do not interfere with enjoyment in any way.

Personally, I liked Beruvella - the end of February, water 27, in general, a fairy tale. and the waves in the ocean are exactly what makes the holiday wonderful, but you can also find hotels with quiet bays, just don't be too lazy to surf the Internet. It rained for almost two weeks in the hotel area only once and then no more than half an hour, but during an excursion into the interior of the island on the way back we got under a real tropical downpour and it poured from Kandy to Colombo all the way. Please note that the entire island has very high humidity, which is not good for people with problems such as asthma.

thank you, Fidel, for the positive and support of the idea that Lanka with waves, ocean wind and picturesque sunsets is only brighter! Yes, and Beruwala is not such a "trodden" place, as is sometimes imagined.
We even had a good time there in July, not to mention the arrivals in January-February.
