Swimming in the Indian Ocean
Good afternoon, tell me how things are with swimming in the ocean? Is there a fenced area for swimming with buoys, lifeguards on the beach, what kind of living creatures swim in the water, stones, etc. Are special shoes required? Has anyone swum on wild beaches outside the hotel area? What can be expected there? Travel time is September.

Good afternoon! No buoys, no fences, no lifeguards! Only waves, strong waves! And, of course, traders on the beach!

There are no buoys at all in Kalutara. Entry into the water, as in Bentota, is quite gentle and long. About 100-150 meters from the shore you are still up to your chest. But there are waves even with absolute calm. People frolic, jumping on them. But I would not advise pretending to be a great swimmer - the current pulls into the ocean. By the way, you don’t need special shoes, sand. I somehow did not observe lifeguards on the beach, although I think that they are still available at the hotel.

Thanks for the answers, but is there any living creature under water and is it worth taking a mask?

In the coastal waters of Lanka on this stretch of the coast there are turtles (giant sea turtles) and coral fish, but not off the coast in the Club Bentota area, but in neighboring villages:
- in Beruwala (opposite the Barberyn Reef hotel - near the reef. on the shallows - you can observe colonies of sea urchins and colorful fish),
- in Hikkaduwa, where the so-called. "coral gardens" - coral colonies near the shore.
However, during this time the west coast can be rough and visibility is low.
There is a Confifi Water Sports Club near the hotel where you can get tips on snorkeling spots upon arrival.

Lanka-Lanochka - how are things with diving there?

Not a dive specialist, but I know that in Lanka diving is best done on the northeast coast, in Trincomal. True, the hotels there are 3 - 3+, and there are not so many of them there. Given the low speed of movement around the island, upon arrival from Colombo you will get there in 6 hours.

You can swim in the Indian Ocean, but swimming is very difficult - constant waves that I pull into the ocean. Special shoes are not needed - there is sand. Near our hotel there were lifeguards who watched the swimmers - they whistled and demanded a return to the coastline. There are no buoys. The living creatures saw only once - a fish a little more than average in size, which jumped out to take a breath of air. The water there is very warm, but because of the wave muddy.

I do not advise even thinking about wild beaches. Two Frenchmen drowned with me. We swam 100 meters from our (Club Bentota) beach. Very strong current. By the way, there are no fences, but the rescuers are sitting on the tower. It is better to swim in Hikkaduwa, I agree with Lanka-Lanochka. There are turtles and smaller waves.

Diving in Lanka is an option, not a desire. Lucky with the weather - a lot of impressions.
Places for diving: on the western and southern coasts - Hikkaduwa (equipment rental points - every 100 meters), underwater rocks off the coast of Bentota; Weligama (diving center at the Weligama Bay Hotel), Unawatuwa; in the east - off the coast of Trincomalee and Nilaveli.
