I'm going on vacation to Israel. I will live in Tel Aviv. I also want to visit Jerusalem, Haifa, and go to the Dead Sea. I want to rent a car at the airport. How realistic is this?

Everything is real, but it is better to book a car in advance. You can read about all the subtleties and features of car rental in Israel, as well as about my personal experience (my personal review about car rental in Israel) here: http://www.alexzimin.com/arenda-avto-v-izraile.html

And in short, what are the nuances?

Took for the new year in Avis. In general, no nuances, as elsewhere

The car is of course very convenient, but for independent travel it is simply necessary. Renting a car is as easy as in any country. The only inconvenience is parking (for a tourist this is always a problem). Municipal fine in Tel Aviv for illegal parking 250 shekels.
The parking rules are not complicated, but you need to be able to read the information signs (in Hebrew). If you have parking at your hotel, then this is already half the battle).
Good luck and have a good trip to the Holy Land!

If you are going for the first time, then renting a car is not the best option. Especially if you want to stay in Tel Aviv. Parking is tight there. The slightest violation of the parking rules - a fine of $ 25 (for parking on paid sections of streets) and more ...
The amount indicated by mishatour - about 65 dollars - is a fine for parking in an unauthorized place. If on the sidewalk or something else, then up to the evacuation :(
Tel Aviv is very busy. It has always been so. And since last year, it’s generally gloom on weekdays - they began to build the metro and perekyl / narrowed part of the streets in the business part of the city. Therefore, if you still decide to rent a car, I strongly recommend choosing accommodation in the cozy resort town of Netanya on the Mediterranean coast. And parking will be free (or very cheap), and there will be no problems with traffic jams.

Renting a car is real, but parking in Israel is extremely difficult, especially in cities like Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. You need to navigate by the color of the sidewalk (they are almost all painted here) and there are a lot of signs in Hebrew, from what time you can drive on what days and on which lane only public transport and taxis are allowed.
