In fact, I managed there on my own without any guide. There is an excellent guidebook "Orange Guide" in the shops, it is pocket-sized, it has maps, routes developed to the smallest detail. There are such guidebooks for many cities, including Venice. Look in the shops and I'm sure that you won't need to spend money for an individual guide (they are not cheap in Venice). Believe me!
