The bustle around the forthcoming gigantic, 15-hour traffic jams on the Russian-Finnish border seriously puzzled us. It was decided to leave our typewriter at home and surrender to chance and convincing assurances that buses "skip" the border only on the way. Well, it turned out to be exactly the opposite. Having approached the border, or rather a kilometer - one and a half before it, we got up.

It was on the night of December 30-31 on the way to Helsinki. The guide left to count the buses. We were 46th. And her exciting remarks that other buses of their company, leaving for Talin, risk missing the ferry, we were very upset. Naturally, I will not publish all the good comments in the direction of our border and the valiant border guards. People tried to sleep. And we, in between naps, stared out the window and found that we somehow did not observe cars towards the border. There is nowhere to go. We are sitting.

So 7 hours passed ...Having passed our customs, we just slipped through Finnish. There were no cars in the corridors for cars. Once again remembering our swallow, abandoned at home, we continued on our way. We opened the tour program, got acquainted again and decided that we would create a holiday for ourselves on our own.

Upon arrival at the railway station, where buses stop, we were warned that we still had to take a sightseeing tour of Helsinki. Another 1.5 hours on the bus…. no, sorry. Leaving our things, we wandered around the city. It was already 14:00 on the tower clock. Nothing before the New Year

Before the trip, of course, we were looking for information about how the Finns spend the New Year. What we read could upset us and make us refuse this trip. It was something like this: “Everyone is sitting at home, nothing special is happening.

At midnight, someone slams crackers on the square and after 10 minutes there is no one on the square. Alcohol is prohibited, they say, they are watching it. ” Doesn't this New Year seem suspicious to you? )))

Although at a gallop, we still slipped through the shopping centers, even managed to buy something for my husband. I basically don’t buy clothes and shoes in Finland, somehow I don’t like the local styles and all these shopping centers. We looked around, had a bite, managed to feed on this New Year's fuss, as it still was, contrary to the assurances of compatriots. People buy gifts, take care to wrap them in beautiful paper, all with packages. There are few young people, still at work. Shops close at 19:00. Some private shops at 17-00. When we returned to the bus that arrived from the tour, we were taken to check into the hotel. It was located in the very center of the city on the street. Mannerheim.

On the visor of the hotel we were met proudly and menacingly hanging icicle, like greetings from St. Petersburg))).

A tempting bed and the temptation to sleep were overpowered by the lack of time, since it was still necessary to find a place for a festive romantic dinner.

The city is extraordinarily beautifully decorated. We met trees from roots to tops wrapped in light bulbs. Of course, an abundance of candles in every window.

By the time we left the hotel, it was already dark, there were much more people in the city. Everywhere young people invited to parties, handing out flyers.

Some establishments there are open from morning until 20-00 or 21-00. The other part is from 21-00 to 4 am.

We walked, took pictures / camped and looked into the windows of pubs and restaurants along the way, choosing a suitable place to return later for dinner.

We reached the cathedral square and found the following: television crews, fire trucks, an ambulance, workers in vests and a huge stage at the steps of the cathedral, with a blue-blue cross towering above it. Something will happen, judging by the preparatory work. It was decided that we would have dinner at a restaurant, and at the hotel we would organize a meeting of “our” New Year with caviar, sweets, tangerines and champagne, listen to Medvedev and go to celebrate the Finnish New Year on this very square. In our homeland, by the way, we never go to cultural mass city festivities.

We returned to the shopping area and went to buy some snacks.

We had to stand in a long queue at the grocery store. People buy beer, champagne, food and of course gifts, those who have not had time yet. A lot of young people are quite noisy and cheerful. The festive mood rolled like a snowball).

Quite obviously, Finnish youth rent hotel rooms, probably for a change, and celebrate New Year's Eve there. And we found some guys in the elevator, they were driving with food packages to their floor and talking about something cheerfully.

And so we went in search of a restaurant. To be honest, there were not many places, those that could suit us, and they were by no means empty. In one, we were even deployed, there were no places. We walked, wandered the streets, worked up an appetite. When we realized that there were no more options and we had to return somewhere where we liked it. In front of us was a building covered with construction film and, according to tradition, a passage for pedestrians ...we began to make our way along this passage and noticed a showcase of one rather cozy place. It turned out to be the Italian restaurant Leonardo. Well, since we are fanatical fans of Italian cuisine, it was decided to stay here. And we didn't regret it.

Someone might say that you should have gone to a restaurant with traditional Finnish cuisine and tasted something meat with lingonberry sauce, etc. , maybe they will be right. But at that moment we wanted Italian. The food was delicious, the bill was light and there was no smoking, which is nice. The huge bowl of pasta I ordered, strewn with mussel shells, looked and tasted great. We left full and satisfied.

Arriving at the hotel in such a mood, we again had to fight the urge to fall asleep. But caviar and presidential speeches awaited us! While I was making sandwiches and serving our impromptu table, we watched the Olivier Show on Channel One, waiting for the traditional speech. As time went. The time has come to say goodbye to the old year. We opened the bottle and then time seemed to stop)))) I don’t know why, but we didn’t look at the clock anymore ...we drank, considered purchases, and the Olivier Show continued.

When we noticed that the president was still gone, it was already 25 minutes past one by our time)))))) I called my mother, who at that time was celebrating the New Year in Peter's restaurant, congratulated her and told her about the "unfortunate" omission of the cherished zero hours ...laughed and ran to the square, because we still had a chance to raise champagne in solidarity with the Finns.

When we found ourselves in the lobby of the hotel, we were again pleasantly surprised by the bustle of the people, people came in and out, cars on the streets as during the day, companies of celebrating people walk in flocks. When we began to approach the square, the roadway on the other side of the city was blocked for pedestrians, a sea of people. We did not manage to get to the center of the square. Something was happening on the stage, the townspeople were probably congratulated on the upcoming New Year. We stood in a place where we could see part of the stage and large broadcasting screens.

After passing through the Finnish customs, I found a strain in my passport about the departure of 01.01. 2010 and so on half the bus. Guys had fun!

It is necessary to say a few words about the hotel:

4*, in the very center of the city. Scandic Marski 4*

The rooms are clean, quite comfortable, but simple.

There is a wardrobe, mini-bar, TV (Channel One), ironing board and iron.

The room we got was with a small dressing room, in which there was a table and a sofa for 2 people.

Underfloor heating, shower in the bathroom, large washbasin, hair dryer.

There is a cooler and a shoe-shine machine in the lobby.

The restaurant is not big. I liked the breakfast, quite varied.
