I was not in Soma Bay for the new year, but I was in Hurghada at the end of December. 2 days out of 7 it was windy and cold. The rest of the days we swam and sunbathed without problems. Even my wife, who never put her foot in cold water, bathed several times every day.

Agree with the above. If you are planning to spend New Year's Eve in Egypt, be prepared that for this period prices are jumping like fast horses, + New Year's Eve dinner is paid separately for this - approximately 75 dollars.
