About the safe sea
In light of recent sad events, I would very much like to know in which hotels in Sharm there are protective or trapping (I don’t know how to call them correctly) nets in the sea. And it’s somehow dumb, to be honest.

IMHO none. At least I haven't seen/heard of it. And then I don’t see the point of going to such a “reservation” for myself ...

What happened in Sharm is, of course, sad. Yesterday my tourists arrived, wrote the situation: it means they banned swimming and now they are hunting for a shark that was biting. Measures have also been taken and blockades have been established for swimming by sharks and special measures have been appointed to comb the area and catch sharks, if they still find them. In general, from January you can go and relax
аватар tata57
The fact that there are such is 100%. Now I would like to know WHERE. If I find out something, I will definitely write.
аватар volkis
tata57! why such confidence? It seems that if there was such a "chip", then this would be "trumpeted on every corner" ...

never seen these anywhere. and reef sharks swim freely there

SO SORRY! WE HAD TO CHANGE CHARM TO HURGHADA DUE TO THE BIT TOURISTS, AS WE WERE GOING TO SWIMMING IN CHARM.
аватар Anetka-gan
Why does everyone think that there are no sharks in Hurghada? once they swam into the charm, then they can go to Hurghada!

Last year, a French woman was attacked by a shark in Hurghada. Madame did not survive, because her injuries were not compatible with life. She was told that she dreamed of trying diving all her life, but maybe she didn’t have to. Someone sadly joked about the lottery. It's true, no one knows their fate...

Well, I just persuaded my husband to go to Egypt, and then the sharks. Now I'm worried. do they go straight to the beach? now I'm worried. does anyone know in hurghada there are often sharks
аватар Toha75
Sharks were, are and will be. And do not console yourself with vain persuasion that in Hurghada, it certainly will not. Here they correctly wrote about the lottery - how lucky ... We still don’t know about all cases, I’m sure that the Arabs, if possible, hush up such incidents. They caught a shark yesterday - but is it exactly the one that bit? They don't want to scare away the tourists.
But our tourists should be slapped on the hands so that the fish are not fed.
аватар Inno4ka2010
Wow! Today they reported that they caught the second one! In Egypt, sharks are on a par with pets, or what? My children are going to go on winter holidays, so what? There is no way to protect yourself, just trust in God?

I'm surprised at the carelessness of some people. Well, didn’t you know that the Red Sea is full of dangerous living creatures??????? Yes, take an elementary booklet or a guide to Egypt - there are even pictures there. sharks, moray eels, rays, poisonous fish, stinging corals.
аватар alrmin77
Sharks are found in all seas, even in the Black Sea they are. It is necessary to follow simple rules of behavior in such places and everything will be fine: 1) do not feed any fish, not even small ones. Do not pester them, i.e. do not touch with hands.
2) you can not swim in the sea with cuts or wounds on the body, sharks react to this from a very long distance. The smell of blood is attractive to them.
3) if a danger signal is received, immediately get out of the water.
4) it is useful to read all the announcements and posters on the beach and in the swimming area, they can be understood intuitively without knowledge of a foreign language.
5) There is one more thing. Like any predator, the shark reacts to fear. Dogs also bark and bite more than those who are afraid of them.
6) In Sharm there is Sharm el Maya Bay, it is very calm there, no waves, no currents, no predators, no corals. Only small fish.

I agree that the Red Sea is by no means safe ... There are a lot of poisonous living creatures - the same sea urchins that you step on or touch and won’t show! And how many poisonous fish, corals and even shells with mollusks or whatever it is better to call them there do not touch...
That is why the rule is not to swim in the sea after sunset - it is extremely dangerous! Many predators hunt at night. Moray eels usually do not touch people, but in muddy water or poor visibility they can.
Sharks ... alas, this is not controlled in any way.
But so that "our people" feed less fish, so yes! Many hands need to be beaten.
How to protect yourself? Vigilance and discretion.
And I agree with the rules above.

The shark attack on the Frenchwoman was in Marsa Alam, where the underwater world is much richer ...
You can also swim in the lagoons, where the shark is unlikely to swim
аватар volkis
In order not to spread panic, the details of the attack are hushed up :(
IMHO, it is necessary just the opposite - to bring as many details as possible to vacationers. Where, when, what, how... The more information the better. At least somehow it will be possible to figure out what's what and where to run ...
And so some myths, speculation and rumors - which give rise to panic and at the same time do not provide any useful information.

As soon as such barrier nets appear on the beaches in Egypt, the rest there will be completely uninteresting and there will be no need to go there. After all, many, including myself, go there only because of the fabulously beautiful sea. And any human intervention only spoils it.
The fact that there are sharks in the sea is not news. The fact that sharks can be life-threatening is not news either. But for some reason, journalists tend to make a sensation out of these two wacts.
Many go to the forest for mushrooms. For some reason, no one is afraid to meet a bear in the forest. I assure you, the chances of surviving a meeting with a bear are much less than when meeting with a shark. And nothing, thousands of people walk through the forest, once a year, again, in some provincial corner of the country, someone is bullied by a bear, and the media are silent, thank God about this.
And then the news was promoted, and there was already a reason to spoil the Red Sea with some kind of nets.
For several years of visiting Egypt, I SPECIALLY swam in those areas where there may be sharks - I did not meet a single one. And the journalists fanned the rumors, as if one had only to go into the sea, and the kuls were already swarming there. Not so all this.

Fencing nets are on TERAZIN.
From Sharm to Hurghada 2 hours by ferry, Helga do you really think that a shark can’t do such a distance?
And then I want to tell you, I have been living in Sharm for 5 years already, I swim at least 3 times a week in the sea, 2 of them from a yacht, I have never seen a live shark in my life. (True, I didn’t specifically look for a meeting with her) BUT! The husband of my girlfriend is a diver, by the way, not a single day have they canceled the release of diving yachts into the sea, over the past 5 days he has not met a single shark. But here are the carcasses of dead sheep, he says that he really saw, so it's not a duck.
аватар alrmin77
Interesting post by Karina-Mango. I have been to Sharm many times since 2006 and in different areas, I have not seen sharks anywhere and my friends, and there are many of them, have also never seen sharks in Sharm. The English writer Arthur Conan Doyle has a short story "The Hound of the Baskervilles". There, too, a dangerous animal was used to intimidate the population. But it turned out that everything was due to inheritance, i.e. because of "grandmothers".
аватар nera7
For some reason, after reading the last comment about sheep, I remembered the Amur tiger. I lived for five years in the Far East. And I saw what the tiger leaves behind, it was the carcass of a torn dog hanging on a tree. .Up to this point, I perceived him as a character from books, and ran through the hills without fear.

What is TERAZINA and where is it?
аватар Karina-Mango
alrmin77 I am by no means saying, of course, that there are no sharks in the Red Sea, they are, there are a huge number of them, I mean that, indeed, as many have written, this is a lottery, and car accidents happen more often than sharks attack per person near the shore...
аватар Karina-Mango
Terrazina is a beach near the old city, near the second gate, if you stand so that they are on the right, then opposite the entrance to the beach a little to the left.
аватар alrmin77
Fair point for me. Yes, there are sharks and there are about 15 species of them in the Red Sea. But, they come to the shore at night. By the way, I remembered that in 2009 at the beginning of June, in the evening at 9 o'clock, I saw 3 reef sharks 1-1.5 in length. On one of the beaches there is an observation deck over the sea and several lanterns. And it was very clearly visible how the sharks were bustling about at the edge of the reef. But during the day, sharks are such a rarity that few people manage to capture them on video. Such shots are a source of pride and admiration. In Sharm, it is necessary to create a modern scientific and educational center about the Red Sea and its inhabitants. Its purpose should be not only the protection of the life and health of tourists, but the protection and protection of the sea and its inhabitants from the ignorance and aggression of individuals. And for violation of the rules of conduct at sea, it's time to take fines and the hotel security service would do it in the dark. They sit all day at the entrance to the hotel, now let them guard the sea.

alrmin77, a month ago I was in Braika Bay and there at the reception they strongly warned that if they see tourists walking on corals, feeding fish, etc., their data will be reported to the tourist police and the tourist police will impose a fine on such citizens. I don't know if promises are fulfilled or not, but IMHO, the way is correct.
As for sharks, I have no reason to doubt that they are there, that they come to the shore during the day, and that among them there are species dangerous to humans. (See papa74's blog for an example).
But besides sharks, there are also cones, Portuguese boats (the case in Hurghada) and other inhabitants, about which not a word is said, but meeting with which is just as likely as with sharks.
Just a shark for journalists is a reason to make a good sensation, because "everyone knows" about sharks.
What about cones? The headline "killer shell waiting for a victim" is, at best, a mockery. For such an article you will not raise the rating.

in my 8 trips to Egypt, I have seen sharks several times. As a rule, these are reef sharks, ugly ones, however, barracudas are hardly prettier. I observed a real shark this year in July: a black fin slowly advancing next to the buoys parallel to the coast. The hotel security drove all the swimmers ashore. And then, two days later, I saw a big whale shark in the water (see my review)..... Will I go to the Red Sea for the ninth time???? YES!!!
аватар nadin65
Terrazina is a beach in El Maya Bay (the area of the old city of Old Market). I saw buoys there, but I don’t know if there is a net stretched there.
Sharks swim into the Red Sea from the Indian Ocean.
The Red Sea is the inland sea of the Indian Ocean.
And even if there are sharks off the coast of Eilat (Israel), this means that they are definitely near all the resorts in Egypt.

Maybe the truth will begin to take more seriously and protect the rest of tourists.

And again a shark attack, this time with a fatal outcome, a German citizen. No details yet...
