Help overcome fear
Gathered in Egypt in December. Gathered categorically, so it is useless to advise not to go. With the hotel, too, unequivocally decided. And now I'm terrified.
The fact is that, as a journalist, I have been writing about the dangerous animals of Africa for several years now. I know them all as flaky, these reptiles crawling, flying and swimming, with all their habits and degrees of poisonousness and human unfriendliness.
I really want to see the reefs, swim in the open sea. Please convince me that there is nothing to be afraid of, that all these parasites swim, fly and crawl in other places, and they are absolutely not interested in a simple Russian tourist as an object.
After all, they still swim, and it seems nothing. So, it remains only to overcome your fear morally.

Sorry, but a stupid post. If, supposedly, write about them, then you should know the habits, names and how they look better than ours. And know who and where crawls, and where "dangerous" animals run in Egypt. All this looks like some then trollism

dimdimysh1, in a strange way, you understood me. I do not ask to describe their habits and names. I want to overcome my fear of the open sea.
Why do tourists swim next to all this poisonous and sharp-toothed splendor and are not afraid?
аватар dimdimysh
And if you know their habits, then you should know what to do to avoid bites, injuries, etc.
About the "sharp-toothed". Is it a shark? Then swim as fast as possible from it.
You name the hotel, maybe one herring a week swims there and that's it)
аватар Revekka
Why a shark? Yes, and you will not swim away from it. Better punch in the nose.
The hotel was chosen Citadel Azur, there is a reef. I watch shootings of tourists, lionfish swim, they meet moray eels, there are a lot of hedgehogs under my feet.

I'm afraid - and I don't swim :))))))) And to overcome a phobia - this is a psychologist!
аватар maxkiroshka
On hedgehogs - do not just step on the bottom and "like him": reef, (or rubber slippers for corals, they will protect from the needle). Moray eels and others - 99B9% are afraid of you themselves (for example, they hide their faces in coral, and it can be difficult to "take a picture" of them), so just don't lure them obsessively into "posing"
The rest of the fish are also not so bold)) For your relaxation, I’ll tell you a funny trick (I saw it myself): a certain piano people (our tourists, of course) hid bread in melts, which, getting wet and swelling, lured flocks of various fish not just to camera lens, but also to .... swimming trunks)))) at the fish "bite" in this area, the men roared: kaaaayf !!) .... so - bolder in the sea)))))
аватар Revekka
Yeah. Our piano tourist is a big entertainer. ))
But I don't drink that much. )

Reveka! If no jokes, it is necessary. that before the first dive into the waters of the Red Sea there was a person who had already tried this beauty. Or take one with you or find it upon arrival. As an example, before arriving in Hurghada, not only did not dive under water with a mask in the Red Sea, but in general even there where there is no life at all. I had to, as with a small child who is being taught to swim, to contact her so that she at least looked under the water, standing in a shallow place. And there she lay on her stomach, swam a little, and then you couldn’t stop it))). There are rules for the danger of living creatures - they are simple. Do not touch with your bare hands and do not touch corals at all, do not step on them and on hedgehogs as well (rubber slippers), in general, it is not recommended to feed the fish, although we don’t give a damn about all this. Yes, no matter how beautiful the fish is - do not disturb her, look at her like in a movie, she will not touch you, but again - our feeding, the fish themselves climb to you so that you feed them.
And a recommendation - 20 km from Hurghada there is a coral reserve Sharm el-Naga, that’s where the buzz is: an abundance of fish, gorgeous corals, fearless living creatures and reefs that start almost from the knee, it’s impossible to drown. There is no such excursion, look with the locals travel agencies. There are photos and a report here.

Yes, it turns out he didn’t indicate who he taught to dive to the reef, of course, his wife. Photo and report in my account in Turpravda. Beeches were not enough.

water shoes to start.
As far as I remember, corals are also poisonous. so do not touch with your hands and try to swim without touching them with your feet. I saw how allergic irritation does not come from them. not the fact that everyone has, but still
I won’t advise on the open sea - I haven’t forgotten the stories about sharks
I was in Savoy, the fish were harmless.
my biggest fear was the gaps between the reefs or whatever it is called. the abyss in general. the first time I dived with glasses, my mother drank water, dear.
I didn’t know before your question that there are aggressive fish there ... they say the truth - you know less. You sleep better. (Well, or in this case you swim more boldly)
аватар alex45
Even about dead corals, except for getting burned, you can get hurt, other living creatures live in them, which can leave a good burn. As far as I remember, there was never a shark attack in Hurghada. The fish are not aggressive, but they like it when they are fed for free, so the impression that a horde of fish is swimming at you and everyone with open mouths will now eat it. They are just curious, they themselves They are afraid of you. Yes, it is undesirable to swim with bleeding wounds, but again I saw small barracudas, small sharks, not those that people eat, but they always went aside.
And once again, TC strongly recommend visiting Sharm el-Naga, this is a one-day excursion with lunch, round trip, if there is no underwater equipment, they will give you, there is a diving club, you, as a journalist, should like it.

Seeing the BEAUTY of the RED SEA will help you overcome fear! Then it will be difficult to lure you out of the water onto land!
Have a good rest and unforgettable pleasant impressions!!!

Thanks a lot for the tips! Maybe I'm really pushing myself. Probably life practice is a little different from scientific theory.

"Probably, life practice is a little different from scientific theory." - 100%
It is very good that during the first trip I knew almost nothing about Egypt, I still did not have a computer and the Internet. And now no Foreign Ministry and the media will intimidate me! Love for the Red Sea is incurable))))))

I live in Hurghada, almost every day I go to the beach to swim with a mask, there are even stingrays and jellyfish in shallow water, they swim between tourists, as I saw, I was also afraid at first, but then I got used to it. Nothing to worry about, just relax and enjoy your holiday! Do not skimp on special rubber slippers to feel more secure, although I swim without them. Have a good rest!
аватар EvdokiyaP
In order not to accidentally step on a hedgehog, swim in special slippers. And the sea is just amazing. Put on a mask and swim, and there is nothing terrible there, the beauty of the underwater world takes your breath away. Personally, I like the sea more in Sharm, but Hurghada also has a beautiful underwater world. So go and do not be afraid of anything, once you try, then nothing will scare you)))
