I once stumbled upon the blog of a traveler who, indignantly shaking a coupon for improper parking, reproached the Estonian capital: a provincial, they say, dusty town, in the center there is nowhere to even sit down and taste a glass of coffee, and they still fine the unfortunate foreign tourists for nothing! The man's indignation is understandable - for a fine of 30 euros you can not only buy a cruise to Helsinki, but also have a nice meal in one of the many restaurants in Tallinn. Well, the fact that he, at the height of the summer season, was so blind that he did not notice not only a single cafe, but even a single summer playground (some of which are open even in winter) is more of his misfortune, not his fault . I hasten to restore the honest name of Tallinn, at least in terms of gastronomy.

I rent out personally tested "points" so that fellow pilgrims who, by the will of fate or desire, ended up in Tallinn, know where to direct their feet to fill their joys and sorrows with at least a cup of coffee with "Vana Tallinn" (or maybe something stronger).

*** OLDE HANSA ***

(Vanaturg 1)

http://www. oldehansa. org/

One of the most popular restaurants among tourists. Valuable primarily for its medieval surroundings. The menu includes only those dishes that were present on the tables of noble townspeople from the time of the Hanseatic League: "Sauerkraut cucumbers from the count of Livonia" or "Sausage dishes from the cook Frederik from wild boar, bear meat and elk meat" are not a wonder here, but potato dishes in You won’t find a menu, because they didn’t exist in Reval at that time. The main "meals" are not cheap, so we managed to taste the appetizers: "Treats of the Sea Lord" (fish platter with red caviar and quail eggs) - 9.80 euros, "Revel's Festive Dish" (meat platter with quail eggs) - 10.

€30, and local restaurant cumin vodka 40ml/€4.50 (40ml is the standard "drink" in many countries). Portions of appetizers are decent, you can safely take one plate for two. The total check for three with a drink is about 50 euros.

Credit cards are accepted for payment, there is a Russian-language menu, the service is pleasant.

Colorful but expensive. Hike here, I would consider more like entertainment on a "full stomach".

*** PEPPERSACK ***

(Viru 2/Vana turg 6)

http://www. peppersack. ee/

Thanks to the red pepper sack above the doors of the establishment, the restaurant building is one of the most photographed objects in the Old City. Like "Old Hansa" exploits its "medieval", but the prices are slightly lower. Every evening guests are entertained here with a small performance - a sword fight.

If you want to watch the "show", it is better to book a table in advance via the Internet (free of charge).

Celebrated a birthday here with friends.

We ordered a complex "Lunch of the hostess of the house" (each), consisting of three courses: a rich appetizer, chicken fillet with a side dish and a dessert with tea - 25 euros / person.

Drinks for a fee. The portions are big, we didn't eat everything. The birthday girl was given a "compliment" - a piece of cake with candles - nice : ). The total check with drinks for four was 125 euros.

Credit cards are accepted for payment, there is a Russian-language menu, attentive service, a free performance at eight in the evening.

A great place to celebrate a family celebration in a non-standard setting or spend a pleasant evening with friends.

*** ESTLANDER ***

(Vanaturku kael 3)

Another restaurant in the Gothic style. It has two small rooms. 90% of visitors immediately order creamy soup with crayfish tails (6.70 euros), which is rightfully considered the "pride of Estlander". The soup is accompanied by a portion of home-baked bread.

Also, a good salad with veal and mushrooms was tested here. The menu includes meat and poultry dishes prepared according to traditional Estonian recipes (13-17 euros/portion), as well as beer and alcohol.

Credit cards are accepted for payment, good service, Russian-language menu.

2 soups - 13.40;

1 meat salad - 6.20;

2 vodka Viru Valge 4cl - 7.00 (3.50 portion);

1 light beer - 4.10;

Total: 30.70 euros for three.

The soup is worth the money. Try it - you won't regret it! : )

*** VANAEMA JUURES ***

(Rataskaevu 10/12)

http://vonkrahl. ee/et/toit/vanaemajuures/galerii

This cozy vintage restaurant is located in an inconspicuous arch of an old house. The restaurant is decorated in the style of the early 20th century. A pleasant atmosphere, authentic antique interior items and attentive friendly service fully justify the name of the restaurant - "At Grandma's". The menu contains hearty and tasty dishes that every self-respecting Estonian grandmother must treat her grandchildren to.

Price range: salads - 3-5 euros, soups - 3-4 euros, main dishes - 8-17 euros, desserts - 3-4 euros.

The restaurant is well suited for a romantic evening.

***KARUBAAR***

(Viru 16 / Sauna 5)

Once loved "Karu baar" (bar "Bear") for mischievous bears in medieval costumes, painted on the walls of this institution. And we made it a habit to mark here the beginning or end of our trip to Tallinn. However, at the end of last year, the owners of the bar decided to update the interior, and the multi-colored Tallinn houses with their elegant inhabitants forced the clubfoot out of the walls of this catering point. I do not argue, it has become fresher and brighter, but along with the bears, a certain charm and comfort of this place has gone. Fortunately, the menu has not been changed. "Karu baar" is really the place where you can eat your fill for 9-12 euros / person. The portions are huge, the meat is served with a side dish of potatoes with canned vegetables.

The most expensive "signature dish" is called "Bear's Joy" (22 euros) - three types of meat in one plate + a side dish of vegetables on a capacious TRAY - a real "test" for

hardened stomachs. Also, there is good beer and rye croutons with garlic. Live music in the evenings

Fridays. However, on Fridays it can be quite noisy here due to the abundance of guests from Finland. "Karu baar" is located at the intersection of Sauna and Viru streets, one block from the Viru Gate.

Russian-language menu, friendly service, serviceable credit card terminal.

Personally, I liked the interior with bears more.

***HELL HUNT***

http://www. hellhunt. ee/

"Hell Hunt" (translated from Estonian as "Gentle Wolf", and not "Hell Hunt", as some people think) - perhaps the most budget institution in the center of the Old City that I know of.

Nicely decorated interior, beautiful view of the old street from the large window, excellent beer layout: from Estonian to Danish, large portions of simple but hearty food, delicious fresh bread. Slow but friendly service.

There is no Russian menu, waiters prefer English as the language of communication, credit cards are accepted for payment. The best thing about the place is its prices.

1 Beer 0.3 "Baltic frontier" (Denmark) - 3.60;

1 Beer 0.3 "Saku on Ice" (Estonia) - 2.90;

1 Fried eggs with beans and bacon - 5.80;

2 Fried eggs with ham and potatoes - 7.80 (3.90 - portion);

Total: 20.10 euros for three.

I will come back here again. . And again...And many, many more times : )

***VENE SOOGITUBA***

http://www. meritonhotels. com/russian-dining-ru/

"Russian dining room" - belongs to the chain of hotels "Meriton Hotels". Once ran here by chance, looking for shelter from the rain. This cafe has an eclectic but rather pleasant interior. We took here a portion of dumplings and vodka "for warming up".

The dumplings were delicious, absolutely "not Russian" liked them

serving - a stand with three different sauces in small containers is brought separately to a plate of dumplings. Russian-language menu, friendly waiters, credit cards are accepted for payment. Didn't like the price/portion ratio. 5 euros for 150 gr. dumplings seemed too expensive.

Apart from the painted samovar and the names of the dishes, there is nothing "Russian" in this cafeteria.

***Maiasmokk***

http://www. kalev. eu/ru/kafe/kafe

Even those who do not like coffee and are indifferent to sweets should visit this place, because this cafe has not only gastronomic, but also historical value. This is the oldest cafe in Tallinn with a unique interior that has not changed for almost 150 years! The cafe menu includes a variety of sweets:

cakes, buns and handmade marzipan sweets. Here you can taste most of the popular Estonian liqueurs.

So, if in doubt which of the many liqueurs to buy as a keepsake, I recommend coming here for a tasting. You can enter the cafe from the street, or go from the premises of the marzipan workshop, the windows of which are decorated with painted marzipan figurines. A master sits in the workshop, who will paint a marzipan blank right in front of you. Also here you can get acquainted with a wide range of sweet products of the Estonian confectionery factory "Kalev", but it's better not to buy sweets here, but in the nearest supermarket : ).

3 Coffee "Espresso" - 7.50 (2.50 - portion);

1 cake "Tosca" with prunes - 3.49;

2 Marzipan sweets - 1.18 (0.59 - piece);

1 Liqueur "Kannu Kukk" - 2.60;

Total: 14.77 euros for three.

Summary: Worth a visit here at least once, out of curiosity.

***Kehrwieder***

(Saiakang 1)

http://www. kohvik. ee

My most favorite cafe. A friend praises the local hot chocolate. But I only tasted tea, coffee and cocoa.

The cozy interior of the semi-basement, with large semicircular windows overlooking the Town Hall Square. In summer there is an open area. Coffee, tea 2-3 euros per cup, coffee with "Vana Tallinn" - 4.95, cocoa - 2.55, hot chocolate - 3.50. The menu includes sandwiches and desserts from 3 euros, as well as a wide selection of alcoholic drinks - from beer to calvados.

There is a credit card terminal, good service, but the staff hardly communicates in Russian, there is no Russian-language menu. There are few Slavs among the visitors, who were apparently afraid of "translation difficulties" : )

A great place to meditate with a cup of hot drink and a view of the Town Hall.

***Chocolaterie de Pierre***

http://www. pierre. ee

Another favorite tourist cafe. It is located in the "secret place" - the Courtyard of the Masters, which is near Katarina Lane. Very vintage cafe, with a warm soulful interior. The mood is reminiscent of a dusty grandmother's chest.

The entourage of the cafe will be appreciated by romantic and creative people, as well as children. People with a less subtle mental organization, whose horizons do not go beyond popcorn in a cinema in a sleeping area, it is better not to meddle here. It is unlikely that they will enjoy sitting on a sagging antique chair at a table covered with a real “deer” wall rug and eating cake from a chipped plate. "Chocolaterie de Pierre" is especially famous for its chocolate. Some Western tourists say with confidence that here it is "the best in Europe". Good mulled wine is also prepared here. Orders must be placed at the counter. You can pay with a credit card, the staff speaks a little Russian, but tired of the influx of visitors, the waitresses are sad and unfriendly.

1 Coffee "Americano" - 2.00;

1 Coffee "Espresso" - 2.00;

1 Coffee "Vana Tallinn" - 5.00;

3 pieces of cake - 7.50;

Total: 16.50 euros for three.

Summary: this cafe is unlikely to leave anyone indifferent.

***Kohvituba***

http://www. kohvituba. eu

Nice miniature cafe in the center of the Old Town. Occupies a very small room, which can hardly fit five tables. Despite the "doll" size, "Coffee House" offers its visitors about 40 (! ) coffee drinks and coffee-based cocktails. There are also a variety of desserts on the menu. Friendly, friendly service, credit card terminal.

2 Coffee "Vana Tallinn" - 8.00;

1 Coffee "Espresso" - 1.50;

2 marzipan with banana - 5.00;

Total: 14.50 euros for three.

Summary: chamber interior, excellent coffee, reasonable prices. I miss.

***Bogapot***

(Pikk jalg 9)

http://www. bogapott. ee

The cafe is located in the Upper Town, a stone's throw from the Dome Church on the famous Pik Yalg (Long Leg) street. It belongs to a family of ceramic artists, whose work can be observed directly from the courtyard of the cafe through the large window of the workshop located here. All dishes on which food is served and interior details are made by the owners.

From a small cozy courtyard you can get not only to a cafe, but also to a small shop selling local ceramic souvenirs. Despite the "central" location, the prices here are quite sparing: sandwiches, pies - 1.20 euros, salads - 2-4 euros, pastries, cakes - 1.60-2.00, tea, coffee - 1.50 - 2.50, mulled wine - 2.50, coffee with liquor " Vana Tallinn "- 4.60, etc. Homely atmosphere, friendly service, menu in Russian.

Summary: colorful, cozy, tasty and inexpensive. Recommend.

***Robert's coffee***

(Viru valjak 4/6)

http://www. robertscoffee. com/

It is located on the ground floor of the shopping center "Viru keskus" and is a network cafe of the Finnish concern Robert Paulig (Robert Paulig). As you know, Gustav Paulig, great-grandfather of Robert Paulig, was the founder of the first company in Scandinavia (1876) for roasting coffee beans. So, if you want to try "real coffee" in Scandinavian style, you should definitely come here. In addition to coffee, they offer tea, juices, snacks and alcoholic drinks.

Pleasant interior of modern design with soft comfortable armchairs. Affordable prices.

1 Portion of liqueur "Vana Tal. cream" - 3.50:

2 coffees - 5.00 (2.50 portion)

1 Coca-Cola 0.5 - 1.75;

1 Portion of rum "Capitan Morgan" - 3.40;

2 Puffs - 3.60 (1.80 pieces);

Total: 14.37

Summary: a great place for a short coffee break while shopping.

Well, at the end of the "bonus" for those who are especially economical: ) Prices of the Tallinn supermarket "Rimi" for products from the tourist's "dry ration" (January 2013), all prices are in euros:

Rye buns 210 gr - 0.75;

Buns with sesame seeds 320 gr - 0.84;

Sliced   boiled sausage 190 gr - 1.00;

Sausages with Parmesan cheese (snack) 85gr - 1.35;

Cheese "Estonian" sliced  .500 gr - 4.45;

Processed cheese 200 gr - 1.35;

Bank of Belgian pickled gherkins 400gr - 1.95;

Hot boiled potatoes (cooking) 0.525 kg - 1.34;

Cookies 250 gr - 1.55;

Marzipan bars in assortment - 0.44-0.47 euros per piece. ;

Soda "AURA FRUIT" 0.5L - 0.53;

"Coca-Cola" 0.5L - 0.25;

Vodka "Saaremaa" 0.5L - 7.69;

I wish you all bon appetit, fresh travels and juicy impressions! : )
