Of course, Cuba is a socialist country and we didn’t really count on chic service, but we expected to see more, no matter how, and the hotel is five-star, but in reality it’s three stars, and even then with a stretch.
We arrived at the hotel at lunchtime, settled immediately, but no one was waiting for us, there was no soap, towels and other accessories in the rooms, it was stuffy in the room, as it turned out later, the air conditioner did not work. Of course, after a 12 hour flight, I wanted to take a shower, but the maid went for towels and returned an hour later, which spoiled our mood a little.
The standard room is large with a balcony, but the furniture and plumbing are old, and on the penultimate day the glass door fell out in the bathroom and broke into small pieces, fortunately I managed to get out on time. The incident occurred at 1700, and the maid came to remove the fragments only at 2100. At the same time, no one made any special apologies in connection with the incident, they only offered to move to another room, but since we had a check-out the next day, we refused .
Here is another interesting story with beach towels, there were three of us in the room, and there were only two beach towels, no matter how much they asked the maid to bring another one, she didn’t bring one, we had to pick up one towel when we moved from one room to another. They couldn’t find a house for exchanging beach towels for a long time, as it turned out there was only one, despite the fact that the beach is large, and if you live in houses located closer to water activities, it takes quite a long time to go to it, and even then it’s not always possible to change a towel succeeded, as they constantly ran out of them. To which the staff said that the guy who brings the towels is delayed and will be around at 3 pm, when the clock was only 8 am. In general, the Cubans are insanely lazy, and the quality of their work did not improve at all if you left them a cookie or a euro, or an Alenka chocolate bar. All this happened in standard rooms, I can’t say anything about the improved rooms, the so-called “Royal Service”, outwardly the houses looked more interesting, but I don’t know what is inside and what service is there.
But not everything is so sad, the Atlantic Ocean made it possible to forget about all everyday troubles, the water is clean, calm and very warm - 28 degrees at an air temperature of 31 degrees, there are no algae and any sea creatures, the beach is wide with white soft sand.
The hotel works according to the "All inclusive" system - everything is free, restaurants, water activities, mini-bar. The hotel has one main buffet restaurant; grill bar, which works only at lunchtime; snack bar and 4 a la carte restaurants - Japanese, Italian, Mexican, "For love", they need to be booked in advance.
The buffet is not bad, meat, fish, seafood, pasta is prepared in front of you in the amount you want. A la carte restaurants, to put it mildly, were not impressed, in a Mexican restaurant they brought scrambled eggs for a snack, the main course: meat, chicken, fish or shrimp, to choose from, but everything was cooked the same way, dessert - cakes and ice cream from the main restaurant. After the a la carte restaurant we went to the main one.
The mini-bar consisted of a bottle of water, beer and soda such as Coca-Cola, Sprite and Fanta, as they called them differently. On the territory of the hotel there is a currency exchange office, a shop and a medical center, everything does not work around the clock, but according to a schedule.
The hotel is quite far from the busy part of Varadero, with cafes, shops, souvenir shops, about 15 minutes by taxi. There is nothing near the hotel, nowhere to go, but in the evening there were interesting concerts and shows in the hotel.
In general, I liked the rest, I can’t say anything about other hotels, but as it turned out, Paradisus Varadero is one of the best in Varadero, according to locals. In general, if everyday trifles do not bother you, go to Cuba to enjoy the wonderful ocean.
Before the trip, we chose a hotel for a long time, considered Paradisus and Iberostar, read a lot of reviews about these hotels, both hotels are considered the most prestigious in Varadero, and yet we chose Paradaisuse, which we did not regret at all. The territory of the hotel is huge and at the same time well-groomed, built up with two-story bungalows, but the number of rooms, of course, leaves much to be desired, without frills, but you can live, the five-meter ceilings and bare walls painted with whitewash were very impressive, at first there was a feeling that you were in a prison cell, but then nothing, you get used to it, in my opinion, this is the only significant minus of the hotel, I will not say anything about the absence of squash (brushes) in the toilets. The first impression of Cuba was spoiled by the weather, and how, having arrived on February 15 in Varadero, we got into a severe storm, which began on February 15 and continued on February 16.
17 and verse only by the evening of the 18th, while the strongest north wind was blowing from the Atlantic, the sky was covered with clouds, the daytime temperature did not rise above 14 degrees Celsius, and at night it did not rise above 8 degrees, it was not just cold, but a real Russian KOLOTUN and therefore all these days I had to sit in the room, there was no question of excursions, because such weather was established throughout the country. The locals explained that such a phenomenon happens once every twenty years and we just got into it, it happens, but on the fifth day, the Lord God still took pity on us and sent us good weather and a cheerful company.
A very large number of Russians rest in the hotel, so the hotel staff can speak Russian tolerably, a Russian-speaking Cuban named Lisa works at the reception desk, as well as a guy named Raul, so there are no problems with checking in and living, all issues are resolved quickly, if you suddenly didn’t like the room when checking in, go to Lisa, the number will be changed. Every Wednesday, the hotel arranges a Russian day, a table is laid for vacationers from Russia, the Russian tricolor is hung out, music plays and champagne is poured, at such a party the hotel administration announced for vacationers from Russia that the next day, two of us will be happy with their arrival D. A. Medvedev , who at that moment was on an official visit to Cuba and then, after the official part, stayed at our hotel for two days. Two days later, the hotel was set up by strong guys from the FSO and the administration of the government of the Russian Federation, and then D.
A. Medvedev, who in other respects did not particularly annoy vacationers with his presence, no one closed the beaches and it was possible to swim freely in the ocean.
The hotel kitchen and restaurants will not let the Russian tourist die of hunger, but it has happened better, take at least the same Dominican Republic, but dear friends, we must not forget that Cuba is in an economic blockade and the country lives on a distribution card system, but at the same time in the hotel has a large selection of seafood and fish.
Entertainment: the hotel is of course intended for couples, for families with children, young people under 30 will be bored, especially in the evenings, when live music starts playing in the hotel lobby, mainly piano and saxophone, then the performance starts around ten in the evening, here in principle and all.
Excursions: you should definitely visit Havana and at the same time take a two-day excursion, in one day you just won’t have time to see everything, but there is something to see, the prices of course bite, but it’s worth it, but the rest of the excursions are optional, I also advise you to visit the reserve Zapota and the Bay of Pigs in the Caribbean.
The hotel’s beach is the best on the coast, I declare this categorically, I personally walked along the coastline for about seven kilometers, so I can say this, the territory of the beaches of other hotels can hardly be called a beach, but our hotel’s beach is very wide, well-groomed, such a crowd of people as on the beaches of other hotels, no. Describing the ocean does not make sense, it must be seen and felt live.
To sum up, I liked the hotel and the country, I advise everyone.
We were in this hotel from February 28 to March 9.2012.
TERRITORY. Beautiful. Very green, lots of palm trees, flowers. Very thoughtful. The reception is in the center, very nice. Without windows and doors, everywhere there are ponds with fish (some dirty), palm trees, plants, herons catch fry in the ponds, in short, it’s pretty exotic)). Near our building in a flower bed I saw a hummingbird, 2 times! The intricately shaped POOL, surrounded by palm trees, is located a little to the side, therefore it is not a central place for movement.
NUMBERS. HORROR-HORROR!! ! ! ! The number itself is normal. But the bathroom is complete darkness! ! ! ! I don't pick on. The previous review talked about cockroaches, I also killed one with us, and not Madagascar, but such an ordinary black cockroach of ours (thank God that at least not a red one ....brrr. . ). We also changed three rooms, they are all the same, only in the third TV was a Sony LCD! ! ! )) , so we decided to stop at it.
The plumbing is old, sometimes there was not enough water pressure to switch to the shower, I had to hold the switch while my husband was washing. There was a Roman curtain hanging on the window, judging by its appearance, it has been hanging there since the time of the Roman Empire. True, after I wrote about the number in the questionnaire, they removed it. The cupboard, also tattered, by the way, was in the bathroom, opposite the washbasin. In short, I did not want to go to the bathroom again.
CLEANING. Ooooh.... it's a song! ! ! ! We got a terrible maid. I’ll make a reservation right away, not everyone is as lazy as dirty as ours. She cleaned terribly, razika commercials 3-4 in 10 days. After the same questionnaire, she ran to us with questions about what was wrong, and asked me to go to the managers and say that she cleans well ...In short, she also turned out to be impudent ...
NUTRITION. In the common canteen they fed decently. One minus - the range of products for 10 days almost did not change.
But this is quite enough to choose food to your liking, it just gets boring later. Of the pluses, that there is a grill stand with seafood and meat, you show, and they cook in front of you, only the freshness of some seafood was in doubt. The fresh juices were not fresh, and those that were absolutely tasteless were probably out of season. Take orange fresh from the vending machine, because there is no fresh at the common counter. Fruit is also out of season, there is nothing to write about.
RESTAURANTS. Cuban, now near the pool, did not go. In Italian very tasty pizza with seafood, otherwise normal food, quite tasty, but nothing special. Romantic, neither mind nor heart, ate warm shrimp, basically delicious. Lobsters are served there, but we overate seafood during the rest, so we didn’t order them. Japanese. This is tin. Please don't go there because it just sucks!! ! !
BARS. Alcohol super.
I don’t know why to buy more cognac, if they serve 5-year-old Torres (excellent Catalan brandy) for free, they pour nasty Napoleon by default. Just ask for Torres, you won't regret it. 12 year old Chivas, Absolut vodka, martini, Campari, Cointreau, lots of liqueurs (all original). A decent rosé , tastier than red and white. And sometimes there is pink champagne, it is sweeter than white. But this is only part of what is there. And of course cocktails! ! They whip pina colada in a blender, and not just pour the frozen mixture, as they did in the Dominican Republic.
SERVICE. For the first time in my life, I felt discrimination based on nationality. It was felt in the common canteen and restaurants. They will pour coffee for old Canadians ten times, and they will pass you by without noticing. Things were better in the bars, although we always gave tips. In general, Cubans are Chaldean people, they are constantly waiting for tips, and not only at the hotel, on excursions too, about them separately. .
ANIMATION.
Quite enough. During the day, a standard set: volleyball, dancing, yoga, water aerobics in the ocean! ! I liked that in the evening in the lobby bar, first live music, then dancing like salsa, then some kind of show, then disco. Not stressful, but at the same time quite fun.
BEACH. HE IS BEAUTIFUL. OCEAN TEAR. This is the factor that covers all the shortcomings of the hotel. In addition, the neighboring Iberostar has a sunbed-wide beach. The main thing is to get there so that there is no storm, because after it there is no complete calm for 3-4 days. When it's completely calm, it's just heaven!! ! ! ! On the beach, lured pelicans, which are fed every day by local fishermen, absolutely free (which is a rarity) give a fish to feed them yourself.
TOURS. Do not take a group tour to Havana for anything in the world. She will be subject to the "retractable" places of the greedy guide, who will then get drunk and will not knit bast, and then she will still extort tips for a lousy excursion.
We were more tired than after the 12 hour flight. Moreover, the prostitute costs 50 cookies more for two. With this we lost. We also went to the crocodile farm (already individually), our guide also got drunk, despite the fact that she was driving! ! ! ! They wanted to take the steering wheel from her, but it seems that while they were having dinner and were on the beach, they came to their senses))
Summing up, I will say. I really liked Cuba. Yes, the rooms are not great. Yes, some Cubans too. But the impressions from the country, from the chic ocean, from the atmosphere, all this is relegated to the 10th plan. If the poor bathroom does not scare you, then in general I liked the hotel. It just seems to be the case in Cuba.
Comparing with the Dominican Republic (December 2011) - in the Dominican Republic the service is better, the people are nicer, the food is better, BUT THE OCEAN is better in Cuba! ! !
