Madeira, this magnificent garden island deserves a separate detailed review, which I am working on. It will only be about the hotel.
I want to say right away that choosing a hotel in Madeira is a difficult and thankless task, and here's why: I want to book everything! There are practically no bad reviews, there are either good or very good ones. I decided to first choose a place, and then - again an ambush: I want to live everywhere! In the end, we settled on the Roca Mar hotel because of the free shuttle to the capital of the island and the promotional offer for double rooms in the sea view.
The hotel is located in the village of Canico de Baixo (Caniç o de Baixo), 8 kilometers from the airport and 13 kilometers from Funchal, on the first coastline. The hotel has its own "beach" - rocks descending to the sea in terraces, and a concrete pier that protrudes into the sea, on which there is a small outdoor pool.
In the photographs, the design of these terraces is misleading, it seems that they have many small pools, but this is not the case - the effect is created by a special anti-slip coating, it is bright blue. Ladders descend from the pier directly into the sea, immediately deep, there is no bottom, the coast is sharp black rocks. In general, if the ocean is worried, weak swimmers need to be careful. Absolutely not suitable for children. The indoor pool and fitness center are located in the neighboring Royal Orchid Hotel and receive guests from Roca Mar (this is practically one area).
The room corresponds to the pictures and description on the hotel website and on booking and fully justifies 4 *. The bathroom is large and clean, a medium sized room with a large built-in wardrobe. The air conditioning is quiet, in winter it was necessary to turn on the heating at night. Everything is clean, linen and towels are new, changed every day. Cleaning, in general, 5+, not lazy, thanks to them!
The seaview rooms have a really beautiful view of the ocean, behind the balcony there is only a lawn and a rock down. On the balcony there is a table and comfortable chairs for admiring the ocean, there are blankets in the closet for the same occasion.
I can’t rate the food, because we only had breakfasts, which are no different from any European breakfasts, whether you are in Prague or Vienna, the same eggs / muesli / jams. According to reviews, the hotel restaurant is famous for its dinners, especially seafood, and we really wanted to visit it (this is not a buffet, a regular restaurant). But it turned out that 10 days is catastrophically short for Madeira to do whatever you want.
The territory is small, green, very clean. In December, everything was already decorated for Christmas, in every free corner - bells, poinsettias, Christmas decorations.
Wi-Fi free in the room did not work normally, went to the reception.
From the hotel three times a day there is a free shuttle to the center of Funchal, you must pre-register, there have never been problems with places.
Two words about the staff. Everyone was friendly and very accommodating, helpful but not intrusive. Excellent professionals, practically, the standard of hotel business workers.
At the beginning of December, the hotel was 70 percent full, in the restaurant we heard all European languages, including Russian.
I was going to write that I would definitely return to this hotel, but it would not be true. I would like to! But there are so many beautiful places in Madeira!
Z. Y. I want to add that my review concerns the winter period. Most likely, in the summer the concept of the hotel is a little different. We saw a diving center, and a beach bar, and some kind of equipment, obviously for animation, everything was closed. Probably, in the summer it is not romantic and relaxed here, but lively and fun!
