Was in September 2009 So I share my fresh impressions. When looking for reviews about this hotel, almost nothing intelligible was found. I will write immediately about the main thing - about the ocean.
The hotel is located on the 2nd line, there is no access to the ocean. But you can go through Pestana Carloton 5 *. Walk to the hotel about 7-10 minutes. Then the descent on 2 elevators to the beach. In total, the road takes about 15 minutes. But we were not bothered. You can enter 5 * ti safely. No one will delay you and will not turn you around 360 degrees. On the platform (aka the beach), the attendants may come up to ask for your hotel card (it is issued upon check-in). Entry to all Pestana hotels is free with this card, as it is one chain. You can use local sunbeds, as well as rent umbrellas for the price of 2 euros.
A few things that are not in the description of the hotel:
1. Beach towels are included in the room (no fees or rent)
2. Sunbeds are free, an umbrella costs 2 euros for 1 day.
You can also take a mattress, I don’t know how much it costs - I didn’t use it.
3. You can rent a car through the hotel they have a contract with a large company Avis (cheaper than a travel agency). Car is brand new, no scratches. Siat Ibiza cost us 2 days, along with insurance, 86 euros.
4. Parking on site is paid - 1 day - 2 euros. (at the Pestana Carloton 5 * hotel - 2 euros 1 hour !!!!!! ).
5. The room has a small kitchenette with a stove, refrigerator and a full set of dishes.
6. The air conditioner is a fan!!! ! (we had a regular number)
7. Hairdryer - I think a vacuum cleaner with a reverse draft will dry my hair better. If you use it, take yours.
8. Well located - there are many cafes nearby, 30 minutes to the center, in principle, it's hard to go uphill back. And it’s very beautiful, on the way to the center there will be a park (entrance is free) with swans and all sorts of beautiful plants.
9. Near the hotel there is a delicious coffee shop with cakes and an ice cream shop (there are always crowds of people). Ice cream is really delicious.
There are also 2 small shops, but they are more expensive than in large grocery stores.
10. Food is the same as everywhere else, with fruits, though, it’s somehow scarce. Finely chopped watermelons, fruit salads. There are also individual apples, pears sometimes even had bananas. We saw champagne a couple of times, but it was hard to drink because it was necessary to steer. (a map of the island and the city can be requested at the reception)
11. The hotel has free Wi-Fi, though in separate areas. There are also in the city center, and in kaveshkas, so there were no problems with communication.
A few additions about the holiday that would help us:
1. Botanical Garden: walk from the hotel for about an hour. (I’ll make a reservation right away that going there on your own is 3 times cheaper than with an excursion). Entrance to the garden itself costs approximately 7 euros. But you need to go up there by funicular, as it is located high in the mountains. the cost of lifting back and forth is 15 euros (if you take it immediately for the descent and ascent, you win around 5 euros).
ATTENTION: the last descent on the funicular ends at 17-45. The garden itself is open until 6 pm. If you do not have time, then by taxi in the amount of 20 euros, or on foot, but very far. The garden itself is very large, walking slowly through it will take about 2 hours.
2. For those who like to travel on their own by car. The island is more for walking. Unfortunately, we did not know this, so we had a problem with shoes and clothes. We were first surprised by Europeans in ankle boots, with backpacks and sticks (similar to skiing). First we laughed, then they laughed at us. )))
If you go to the easternmost point of the island. There on foot on mountains about 3 km + to come back. (the guide told us a little bit about shoes, not a word at all). But everything is civilized there, steps, special protective structures are stretched. Very nice, it's worth it. Take water and something to eat with you. Because there is nothing there, not even a toilet.
Untouched nature. Parking there is free.
If you go to the mountains the highest point is about 1800 meters (pico da airero). It is cool there, probably 15 degrees, and everywhere there are very strong winds. You will be above the clouds. Very impressive. You can sit in a cafe, go to the observation deck, or go further to the highest mountain, Pico Ruiva, walk about 7.4 km. Or a shortened route 5.2km (pico de ruivo). The main thing is to take clothes and shoes (we didn’t go, we had previously made a 6 km march and there was no sweatshirt to put on top)
Traveling along the levadas in the central part of the island there are the most famous levadas - there are 25 waterfalls. Again several routes, the longest is about 5 km, the short one is 1.2 km. Again, you need comfortable shoes, no heels, ballet flats, slippers and other nonsense. Madeira is an island of contrasts and varied nature. In the mountains fog, wind, humidity. On the coast, the sun is hot.
