We went to Portugal for the first time this summer. The hotel turned out to be chic, as promised in the travel agency. Meals were ordered for breakfast, they cook quite tasty in the hotel restaurant. The rest of the time we ate at restaurants in the city.
Decent hotel, nice staff. We didn't spend much time there, but in general we really liked it, we recommend it.

The main building of the hotel stands, as it were, on a hill, and the rest of the buildings go down, ending with access to the sea. There is an elevator for descending at each level. There is an elevator for descending at each level. There is no beach as a current one, sun loungers stand on a concrete slab at each of the two pools, there is a descent into the sea by stairs quite convenient (not for children), you must immediately swim, deep. Madeira still has beaches, few of them, some with black sand of volcanic origin. A friend came from a nearby hotel across the road, she chose everything so that without “Russians”, but it turned out to be impossible to swim there.
We took the J. suite, a very impressive view from the window, there is a mini-dining room with a set of dishes and a kettle. It is better to buy water right across the road in a supermarket, all in the room for a lot of money. Good breakfast, didn't order any other food.
The good location of this hotel gives it a big plus. Quite close to the center of Funchal, cross the road and go straight up or turn right and go through the port area, exit to the central promenade. But the road through the port seemed to us not very pleasant, deserted and disturbing, we used it only once. There are enough restaurants near the hotel, but it is better to choose a place a little further away for dinner. Turning from the hotel down the street to the left, you will come across all sorts of establishments with very tasty cuisine, which is typical of Portugal, and excellent local "green" wine. In the same direction there is a rather famous fish restaurant "O BARQUEIRO", everything is delicious, but the prices bite. Very close to this restaurant there is the Madeira Forum shopping center, nothing special, but we bought something. It’s better to take a taxi to the shopping center and the restaurant, it’s not clear with buses . . Or maybe you can get there on foot, we took a map in the tourist center and orientated ourselves on it.
We bought a tour of the island, which we did not regret. Have a look at the nearby sights. Walk along the central embankment to the end, where the boarding of the funicular begins, which is already visible from afar. They take you to the top platform, where there is a wonderful tropical garden and the Monte Palace (former hotel), very beautiful, and the views from the funicular are breathtaking. Leaving the tropics, you change to another cable car, you find yourself in a beautiful botanical garden, there is a bird park at the exit. A walk is what you need!
In Madeira, you can relax at any time of the year, it will be comfortable and fun!

We chose a comfortable hotel. We decided to stay at the Pestana Carlton Madeira. Of course he is Oh-oh-very huge! Of course, we had everything in the room: TV, hair dryer, iron, refrigerator... in general, everything you need. Our balcony had an ocean view. Cleaning was daily. In terms of nutrition, we only had breakfast (their branded cakes really liked). … More ▾ We chose a comfortable hotel. We decided to stay at the Pestana Carlton Madeira. We liked it.

A hotel with a large and beautiful territory, beautiful views from the hotel. Most preferred are rooms with a side view of the ocean and the city at the same time. Great beach, lots of sunbeds. Most preferred are rooms with a side view of the ocean and the city at the same time. Great beach, lots of sunbeds. There are no ebb and flow here. Entering the water by stairs is "painless" as the water and air are about the same temperature. Until November 7, it was hot both in the sun and in the shade. Then the sun disappeared for a couple of days and it got colder in the shade, I had to sit on the beach in a T-shirt, but you can always swim. On November 11-12, the sun shone brightly and it was hot again (the water temperature did not fall below 22 degrees). For breakfast there is wine in any quantities. The room has a tea set, a cup and a teaspoon. But you can’t eat Azorean pineapple in the room, because there are no knives, plates or forks in the room. But there are no Azores pineapples at this time of the year either, they appear only in January, there are only local ones.
The hotel is quiet rest at this time mostly pensioners. There is a TV channel "Russia" in Russian. But at that time I did not manage to find excursions in Russian. There are very few of them. For excursions in Russian, you should not contact the reception. If you leave the hotel and walk 70 meters, keeping to the left, you will see a Russian travel agency. It will be cheaper and easier to agree on what you need. They can also answer any questions about Funchal. For a self-guided tour of the city, it is worth taking the yellow sightseeing bus. For 12 euros you can ride it for 2 days on two routes (yellow line and blue line). Excursion through headphones in Russian.
In Funchal, I realized for the first time that people go to a restaurant to eat delicious food. Since the signature national dish of the locals is a pig, in one inconspicuous restaurant called Five (5), I ordered pig meat in a local sauce. I have never eaten anything like this, it could be eaten not only without a knife, but also without a fork (only with a spoon). With garnish on a separate plate, it cost 11 euros. In another restaurant, it was not possible to repeat the success, bitter disappointment befell. Therefore, for those wishing to visit the Five restaurant: from the hotel to the left across the bridge, along a series of bars and restaurants on the right side, after 20 minutes of a very slow walk you will come to the goal (behind the China Town restaurant).
By location (close to the center), by design, service, with its own beach - the best option in Funchal.

I was looking for a hotel for a very long time - I stopped at Pestana carlton. The hotel is very good. Big good rooms. I advise you to take with an ocean view. We had a room on the 15th floor - a gorgeous view of the city and the ocean (there was a side room). at first, they wanted to change how they settled in, because they paid for a sea view, but when they saw the night city from the 15th floor. . . The beauty is indescribable, we decided to leave everything as it is. Every evening, after walking around with a glass of Madeira, we admired the city and listened to the ocean. After cleaning. There is absolutely nothing to complain about. Every day, with one maid cleaning and changing towels. A little later, another one came and changed the towels again : ))) at first it was fun for us, then we even got a little tired - and often refused. It turned out that the towels were literally disposable. But for the hotel, I think this is a big plus, few can boast of it. Breakfasts. I don’t quite understand people who write about monotonous breakfasts as a minus to the hotel. Excuse me, what do you eat at home? In short, breakfast is breakfast. Reasonably good and large selection of all typical breakfast items. Delicious national pastries, about five types of fruit. Dinners we did not take can not say anything about them in the hotel. We ate in restaurants, which are very numerous along the resort street. I especially advise - O'barchiero (something like this in Russian : )) very tasty seafood - huge portions at reasonable prices. In general, I want to say that wherever we ate, the average bill was about the same - about 40 euros for two (give or take) without alcohol. Back to the hotel - 2 swimming pools both with sea water. One is located on the upper platform - foreigners mostly rested in it and around it. The swimming pool located on the lower platform is in close proximity to the ocean. The water during our stay was 25 degrees. the weather was also gorgeous - there was no terrible heat like in Lisbon, where we were the day before, it was very comfortable. Descent into the ocean from stone platforms equipped with stairs, like in a pool. I am not a very good swimmer and before the trip I was worried that I would immediately find myself in depth. If someone has such doubts, do not worry - the water holds perfectly, it is very comfortable to swim, although for some reason it was not possible to say that there were a lot of swimmers and mostly, of course, Russians. Foreigners mostly swam in the pools. What else about the hotel. . . Yes, it is not new, but we did not see any minuses in the atmosphere and in the service, the only carpet at the reception was some kind of shabby one. But this is rather from the category - "what to complain about. " I advise the hotel to everyone, but it's not 5 stars, solid 4, but if you need luxury hotels, then you probably need to choose another qualification category. I also want to note its location - very good, in my opinion. At the beginning of the resort street, but a couple of meters away from it. Convenient for walking in Funchal itself, and along the resort street (that's what I call the street where almost all the hotels are located, I forgot the name). fabulous island highly recommend! We rented a car for 2 days, but already in a day we traveled the whole island - there were a lot of positive emotions and unforgettable impressions of beauty. We also took an excursion to the levadas (I advise! ) And to the western part of the island. The day before, we all traveled by ourselves, of course, but it was interesting to listen to the guide and he showed us some places that they themselves did not see or did not pay attention to. If you have any questions ask - I will answer. It is impossible to write about everything at once. In any case, Madeira is a unique place to visit!! !

I read a lot of foreign sites about the hotel. Not everyone was happy with the breakfast. Indeed, for 5 stars you can do better. Be sure to know a little, at least at the school level, to know English. Lunch and dinner is better in Funchal. The further into the city, the tastier and cheaper. And Sergei, a waiter from Ivano-Frankivsk, will tell you everything. For two with wine 45-50 euros. And do not go out into the city in heels. Funchal is a cobblestone pavement and descents and ascents. Looks funny. Shoes should be comfortable, especially for excursions. Renting a car is a lot of fun and great views. Roads are class. But be careful in the mountains. The locals love to drive. It's enough for 3-4 days.... Botanical garden, levadas - in winter there will be something to remember. . . The general impression is good. Tickets, hotel all booked through the Internet... .

The hotel is beautiful and comfortable. The Superior Room provides everything you need for a quality and relaxing holiday. Room cleaning 2-3 times a day with change of towels and 1 bed linen. Specifically, I don’t like the diet - only breakfast and constant trips to restaurants - the inability to choose a set of dishes and the number of servings, but this is not the hotel’s fault, you can still take lunch, paying extra. … More ▾ The hotel is beautiful and comfortable. The island left the most pleasant impressions about itself. The hotel was first booked by another, but at the last moment they did not confirm the place. The travel agency suggested another hotel. I already had some idea about him on the Internet, so I agreed. The hotel in all respects corresponds to its level, like all other hotels on the island. They value their reputation here and everything in the hotel from the staff to the service justifies the money invested in the ticket. The hotel is close to the city center and on the way there are a lot of small bars and restaurants for every taste and income. The hotel offers a breakfast buffet. The food is varied and delicious. Even dry champagne is offered, which elderly Germans and young Russians do not disdain! A pleasant doorman at the entrance to the hotel: I got the impression that he knows several languages. And every tourist is pleased when he is greeted in his native language. In general, this is real Europe, and the service there is European.
