Palanok Castle

Mukachevo castle
Carpathians, Mukachevo
There are no more than five similar to Mukachevo castle in Europe. A knightly spirit still hovers here, the locals remember ancient legends and firmly believe that this impregnable fortress will survive many more generations. Mukachevo Castle has its own beautiful name - "Palanok". It comes from the name of wooden stakes, which served as the very first defensive line on the outskirts of the mountain - right behind the moat, 17.5 m wide and 6.5 m deep, which was filled with water.

Serbian prince George Brankovich, head of the royal court Vasily Palotsiy, regent of Hungary Janos Gunyadi, wife of the Hungarian king Lajos Maria - these are just a few owners of the castle. It is curious that after the fall of the world-famous Parisian Bastille, it was the Mukachevo Castle that happened to become a pan-European (Austro-Hungarian imperial) political prison. For 110 years, more than 2.5 thousand progressive-minded figures from many countries have been kept in the local casemates.
The keepers of the castle-museum, after representatives of the Soviet “culture” left from here - vocational school technicians-machine operators - are trying to restore it to its former greatness. For several years now, work has been going on to restore the ancient chambers, courtyards and bastions. In fact, most of it has been preserved in its original form.

If you are in Transcarpathia, be sure to find the opportunity to visit Palanok Castle. Very interesting place for architecture. It will be interesting even just to take a walk to see, even without a tour. Interestingly, it can be seen for several kilometers. This is exciting.

No matter which side you drive up to Mukachevo, the castle is visible from everywhere. It rises above the city and occupies almost 14 thousand square meters. It has been restored and many films have been filmed here. Everyone can get into the castle, the entrance is paid, you can take a guide who will tell you many interesting historical facts and legends. There are night tours, they say that these are completely different experiences, but we were during the day. It is better to leave the car downstairs, as the parking lot is small.

For the first time I see such a strange restoration of castle architecture. Under the root spoils the whole impression. Maybe I expected a lot, but it cannot be compared with Khotynskaya, Akkermanskaya or the same Kamenetz-Podolskaya. But I advise you to visit, a turbulent history has left Ukraine a few well-preserved castles.

I was in the castle with a group of children, but to my surprise, the guide managed to interest them in the story so much that most listened with their mouths open)), and this, I think, is real professionalism. I was very impressed by the landscapes that open from the walls of the castle and the mysterious legends of the castle, creating an atmosphere of a fairy tale. Good afternoon, were in the castle this winter. I liked it very much, one of the few that has been preserved and it conveys the atmosphere of the past. At the entrance there is a moat, a wooden bridge that rises. Beautiful villa on Mukachevo. There are cafes and shops inside.

The main tourist attraction of the city, Palanok Castle, can be seen a few kilometers from Mukachevo. It is ruled by a 68-meter extinct volcano behind the pedestal. The city is somewhere down there, and the outpost is open to all eyes and winds, and only behind, in the north, rises the volcanic Carpathians. He saw a lot at his age and now looks at Europe and its own past, which is almost a millennium long. Palanok is an invincible and photogenic relic of the Middle Ages. The hill, of course, is not of artificial, but of natural - volcanic - origin, although in the IX-XI centuries.

Mukachevo Palanok Castle is adorned with its splendor and uniqueness. Its history is shrouded in legends, legends, mysticism. Its greatness and beauty are reflected in the construction of the castle. From a bird's eye view we can see how the city of Mukachevo is adorned with its splendor and uniqueness. The castle is surrounded by a deep, 6-meter moat, which was a three-tier line of defense. The first mention of Palanok Castle dates back to ancient times - the eleventh century. The territory of the castle itself is fascinating - about 14 thousand square meters, where there are many interesting rooms and exhibits.

Castle "Palanok" - one of the most valuable historical and military-architectural monuments of Transcarpathia and throughout Ukraine. The history of the castle is full of events, covered with legends and military glory. There is no exact date of foundation of the castle. Now the castle "Palanok" houses a historical museum. In the castle you can see the restored medieval military architecture, ancient courtyards and galleries, which host exhibitions of modern sculpture. By visiting the art gallery of the museum, you can see the works of outstanding artists of the Transcarpathian land of the last century.

Palanok Castle is located on the top of an extinct volcano. The entrance is allowed only to the base of the mountain, further on its two stone-paved roads. From the foot of the castle, as well as from several levels of the castle itself, wonderful views of Mukachevo open up. Unfortunately, the climate is so humid that nothing can be seen further than the city, although the altitude allows it. The castle is surrounded by a moat more than 6 meters deep and consists of three tiers - lines of defense.
