Mount Koshka and the rocks of Simeiz

Mount Kishka
Crimea, Simeiz
A complex monument of nature (1947) in Simeiz, elevated to the rank of state significance (1984).

The bizarre shape of the mountain justifies its name: looking closely, you really guess the “head” as if crouching on the shore, higher up the slope - a curved 260-meter “back”, and then the “tail” of a giant cat. Near it are scattered other original limestone rocks: the Diva who stepped into the sea, the fragments of the Monk destroyed by the storm, Panea, the Swan Wing. Some of them are associated with mythical traditions and legends. On the slopes of Koshka there is a real museum of landforms: stone chaos alternates with grandiose peaks and towers, abundant karst ruts.

An 80-meter karst mine goes deep into the massif. And on top of this geological foundation, like an emerald blanket, relict woodlands spread. The high juniper and strawberry tree, Crimean pine, Pontic needle, rockrose, pistachio, listed in the Red Book, grow in this natural botanical museum. Mount Koshka is the only habitat in the CIS for thyme-leaved fumana. 16 species of local plants are listed in the Red Books.

Many times we drove along the highway past Mount Koshka, but somehow it didn’t work out to stop there. This year, we finally decided to fill the gap. Leaving the bus on the Sevastopol highway, they climbed the path to the mountain. On the Internet I found a description of the route, which says that you can go down the path to Simeiz. But, alas! Apparently, I did not read carefully, and we did not find a more or less safe path. I had to return to the highway and from there go to the village along the road for about 3 km.

Mountain "CAT" - the joy of the tourist and the fun of the climber. Like many mountains in the Crimea, Mount "Koshka" has several historical names at once: the name "Baka" from the Turkic - Toad is mentioned; the ancient Greeks called - "Lemena" - the Bay, claims to be correct, the name "Kush-Kaya" - Falcon Mountain. But still, it is more correct to call it: "Kosh-Kaya", which in the Turkic language means: "Kosh" - a pair, and "Kaya" - a rock, that is, "Steam Rock". So it was many millions of years ago, when from the majestic plateau "Ai-Petri" (the name that has come down to us, translated from Greek - St.
