Temple Wat Chalong

Wat Chaiyatararam, Wat Chalong
Thailand, Phuket
The full name of the temple is Wat Chaiyatararam. It is located in the southern part of the island in the area (tambon) Chalong, 10 km south of Phuket Town. The date of foundation is not exactly known, the first written mention refers to 1837, when the monastery was rebuilt. Initially, the temple was located in the northern part of the modern territory of the complex.

The monastery received royal status in 1846, when it was given the official name Wat Chaiyatararam. The temple gained fame thanks to Luang Pho Chem - first a monk, and then the abbot of the monastery (from 1876 until his death in 1908), a talented healer and chiropractor. Today the monastery is the main place of pilgrimage for Thais on the island.

Every year a fair is held in Chalong Wat. Its timing varies from year to year. During the week, the territory of the monastery resembles a market, where crowds of local residents go all day and especially in the evenings.

One of the most famous temple complexes in Phuket. It is unique in that there is a piece of the relics of the Buddha here. Not only the architecture seemed interesting, but also the feeling of the place. It seems that you are not in a temple, but in a museum. There is a house of the abbot of this temple, in which there is a figure of the monk himself, eerily similar to a living person.

Wat Chalong is a traditional, in my opinion, Buddhist temple complex, well-groomed and beautiful. Interestingly, this is one of the few places where you can see the ashes of the Buddha. Usually access to Buddhist relics is closed to ordinary people. I wouldn't go here specifically.

I must say right away that this was my first visit to a Buddhist temple. Then I happened to visit some more, but I will never forget the first impression : ) Firstly, you will be asked to take off your shoes, it is customary to walk barefoot in Buddhist temples - one of the tourists joked about this - "so that everyone gets sick with one fungus" : ) It is not customary to walk in socks, only a bare foot. It is customary to leave shoes at the entrance to the temple. The tiled floor pleasantly cools the feet after the hot sun outside.
