The old quarter of Ribeira is one of the most visited places in Porto. Its narrow streets with colorful house facades are jumbled like a maze, and some houses still stand on Roman or medieval foundations. Many of the buildings here are lined with traditional azulejo ceramic tiles, and clotheslines are hung on their balconies for drying clothes. The Ribeira area is made up of a weaving of medieval streets and shabby lanes in places. This poor but attractive area of Porto ends with a cozy square along the Douro River.→
