University of Coimbra

Universidade de Coimbra, Velha Universidade, University of Coimbra Alta and Sofia, University of Coimbra
Portugal, Coimbra
The University of Coimbra was founded by King Dinis I of Portugal in 1290 and is one of the oldest universities in Europe. This is not only the most prestigious university in Portugal, but also an interesting example of medieval architecture. The university is located in the former royal palace of Alkasov, the mannerist style prevails in the architecture and design of its palace buildings.
Worthy of attention are the magnificent chapel of the Archangel Michael, the Cathedral of the Holy Cross (XII century), the botanical garden and the clock tower of the XVIII century, the museum of church art and especially the academic library named after João V with a rich baroque interior.
Many prominent figures of science, culture and politics have studied or taught at this university.

Coimbra is called the "city of students" - and this is no coincidence, because there is the oldest university in Portugal, located in the upper part of the city. Its vast university complex is divided into 2 parts - Alta and Sofia and still keeps its centuries-old student traditions and customs. Acquaintance with this educational institution often begins with its spacious courtyard, which is surrounded on three sides by university buildings with beautifully designed facades, and on its fourth side there is a terrace with a wonderful view of the city and the Mondego River.

Coimbra sunk into the soul after the Argentine musical film of the fifties of the last century, "The Age of Love. " The song "Coimbra - the city of students" from this film could be heard everywhere in those years. It was performed by the actress and singer Beatriz-Marianna (on the stage - Lolita) Torres, who gained insane popularity. Of course, it was impossible for me to get to Portugal then, although it was in those years that foreign trips of groups of Soviet tourists began, and not only because of my young age - a country where the Salazar regime ruled, by the way, a former graduate, and then a professor at the University of Coimbra was closed to us.
