Coimbra sunk into the soul after the Argentine musical film of the fifties of the last century, "The Age of Love. " The song "Coimbra - the city of students" from this film could be heard everywhere in those years. It was performed by the actress and singer Beatriz-Marianna (on the stage - Lolita) Torres, who gained insane popularity. Of course, it was impossible for me to get to Portugal then, although it was in those years that foreign trips of groups of Soviet tourists began, and not only because of my young age - a country where the Salazar regime ruled, by the way, a former graduate, and then a professor at the University of Coimbra was closed to us.

And now the opportunity to visit the City of Students and the first, for a long time - the only, the University of Portugal presented itself. Coimbra is located approximately in the middle of the country's longest railway line, Lisbon-Porto. The university was founded in 1290.
King Dinis, and received the building in 1537. King Joã o III donated his residence to the University - a royal gift, it doesn't happen often! The graduates of this educational institution were the poet Kamoensh and Anthony, ranked among the Saints for the extraordinary penetration of their sermons. Remember the amazing interior of the Cathedral of his name in Padua! Strictly speaking, St. Anthony did not study at the University itself, but at its predecessor, on the basis of which it was created, and even then the University did not have this building.

The September day was hot - over 30. From the Santa Clara Bridge across the full-flowing Mondego River, a well-known view of the ancient city - the first capital of Portugal from 1139 to 1256 - opens up. The University is visible on the top of the hill, but it was not immediately possible to get to it, the streets turned out to be very steep and intricate.
I'm lucky! The wedding was celebrated, obviously, by university staff. Very cute couple!
Thanks to this, we managed to look into the baroque chapel of San Miguel and hear the magnificent organ. They were not allowed inside, but several tourists (two German women and myself), who took pictures through the arch of the open doors, were treated condescendingly.

The treasure of the University is the Library, it is decorated in the baroque style so original that it is difficult to compare with anything, but you can’t take pictures there. Fancy gilded wood carving keeps the warmth of the hands of ancient masters, even if they have been gone for many centuries in this world. No more than 20-25 people are allowed in, and only after the previous ones have left.
We managed to walk a little along the corridors, courtyards, stairs. Under the Library there is a hall with old printing presses and books, but the staircase upstairs to the library is bricked up. There are leaflets about the University in different languages, but without Russian text. I had only half a day in Coimbra, It was a pity to leave the wonderful city.
