Monument to Jozef Ditl

Monument Dr. Jozef Dietel, Monument to Jozef Ditl
Poland, Krakow
A monument to the outstanding Polish and Austrian public and political figure Jozef Dietl (1804 - 1878) was erected in front of the Franciscan Church on the Square of All Saints in Krakow. After studying at the Medical Faculty of the University of Vienna, the professor teaches within its walls, writes several scientific papers on practical medicine. From 1861, Jozef Dietl was a member of the Galician Sejm, from 1862 to 1865 he was rector of the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, and in 1866 he was elected president of Krakow. The new mayor immediately began decisive reforms in the field of urban education, public utilities, amenities and culture. Dietl was elected president for a second term, awarded the title of honorary citizen of Krakow.
The monument to Jozef Ditl was cast in 1939, after almost three years of work on it, according to the project of the outstanding Polish sculptor Xavier Dunikovsky, who had previously participated in the restoration of the Wawel Castle. The three-meter bronze figure of Ditl, standing thoughtfully, with a rod in his hand and in the mantle of the rector, is set on a high marble pedestal. The heavy folds of the mantle fall in rare waves, emphasizing the firmness of Dietl's character.

In 1828, Dietl received his doctorate in medicine. He is considered one of the most prominent Polish doctors of the XIX century. In 1851, Dietl was invited to become a professor of medicine and anatomical pathology at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, and ten years later was elected rector of the university. His merits in the development of the old Polish higher education institution are very great. At the same time, in 1861, Dietl was elected a deputy of the Galician Sejm, in which he was a supporter of the full autonomy of Galicia and fought for the introduction of the Polish language in schools.
