In 1828, Dietl received his doctorate in medicine. He is considered one of the most prominent Polish doctors of the XIX century. In 1851, Dietl was invited to become a professor of medicine and anatomical pathology at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, and ten years later was elected rector of the university. His merits in the development of the old Polish higher education institution are very great. At the same time, in 1861, Dietl was elected a deputy of the Galician Sejm, in which he was a supporter of the full autonomy of Galicia and fought for the introduction of the Polish language in schools. For this, the Austrian authorities prematurely, namely in 1865, released Dietl and retired. However, Dietl did not stop his medical and social activities. In 1866-1874 he was elected president of the city of Krakow and showed great concern for the sanitary condition of the city, expanded the water supply and sewerage network.
The monument to the Child was cast in bronze in 1939 by Xavier Dunikovsky. According to the sculptor's idea, Dietl is depicted very simply and modestly: he seems to continue to remain in the thick of everyday life of the people of Krakow, for the prosperity of which he did so much.
