Church of St. Nicholas

Poland, Krakow
The Church of St. Nicholas is a landmark with one of the longest and most complex history in Krakow. The earliest mention of the "chapel" (chapel) dates back to 1229.
Later, due to fires, the church was rebuilt several times. In 1652, the Vistula River flooded and the church was flooded with water. A few years later, during the invasion of the Swedes, the church itself and other parish buildings were reduced to ashes. In 1768, during the fighting, Russian troops burned down the parish buildings. Although the Church survived, it was completely looted.
Currently, the Church of St. Nicholas is active and is closed to tourists. On its territory there is the only and unique Lantern of the Dead in Krakow, preserved from the 19th century. This is a chapel that served to warn travelers. Such lanterns were placed near leper hospitals, cemeteries, and also at crossroads near monasteries outside the city walls.

The first Romanesque church on this site was built in the XI or first half of the XII century and belonged to the Benedictines, as evidenced by the bull of Pope Gregory IX in 1229. In 1467 the church was transferred to the Cracow Academy. Later the building was dismantled and a Gothic church was built in its place. In 1655, during the Swedish invasion, it was looted and burned. In 1677-1684 a new baroque church was built. Sculptures of Saints Peter and Paul are installed in the niches of the first floor.
