Brama Stongevna

Butter churn towers, Brama Stagiewna, Tray gates, Stong gates
Poland, Gdansk
Brama Stongevna is one of the most interesting monuments of Gdansk in Poland. "Brahma" means "gate" in Polish. These two towers were built at the beginning of the 16th century, in the past they were used as a barn for storing grain and food. The type of structure resembles a small fort. There are also two other sights about 300 meters away: Bread Gate (Brama Chlebnicka) and Green gate” (Brama Zielona).

The defensive towers built at the beginning of the 16th century are the remains of the city's fortifications. These are two squat towers of different thickness and height, which are interconnected by an arched ceiling that turns them into gates. Which are called: Tray gates, or Brama Stongevna. These towers are often called "Churns" in guidebooks. Moreover, in Polish, each of the towers has its own name. The larger one is called Stongvoy, and the smaller one is called Stongevka. Stongva is decorated with a composition of coats of arms, which is often visited by tour groups.
