Temple of the Tooth Relic

Sri Dalada Maligawa, Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic
Sri lanka, Kandy
The Buddhist temple of the Tooth of the Buddha was built specifically to store the great relic of the Buddhists - the tooth of the Buddha - by one of the kings of Ceylon in the 18th century in the city of Kandy. Now the Dalada Maligawa temple complex, in addition to the temple, also includes a palace-residence of the Ceylon kings and even a prison tower. Externally, the temple does not make much impression, but inside it is richly decorated: there are many different Buddha statues, and the ceilings are decorated with frescoes from the history of the temple and its relics. The tooth is stored in seven precious caskets nested one inside the other, so it is not possible to see this relic with your own eyes.

A beautiful and colorful temple for lovers of history and architecture, the atmosphere and air are saturated with tranquility, when you hear prayers and birdsong, you feel special. Definitely worth a visit for the overall development. Of course, they won’t show you the Buddha’s tooth (you can see it only on a certain holiday), but it’s no less interesting. Important! When visiting, women cover their shoulders and knees (think about this point with a wardrobe), or you will have to dress at the entrance in handkerchiefs for 200 rupees.

I believe in Jesus Christ, I believe in Gautama Buddha, I believe in Prophet Mohammed, I believe in Krishna, I believe in Garuda. (Lyapis Trubetskoy) I fully subscribe! And Buddhism is especially close to me. Therefore, temples in Sri Lanka interested me very much. True, to visit them, a certain dress code was required, which was not always observed on vacation. However, we did get to see a couple. One is quite simple, something like our chapel. The second one is richer. The monk showed us, despite our inappropriate appearance.
