Vatican Pinakothek

Pinacoteca Vaticana
Italy, Rome
The Vatican Pinakothek is one of the Vatican Museums.

The Vatican Pinakothek (a collection of paintings open to the public) was founded by Pope Pius VI in the second half of the 18th century.

In 1932, a new building was built for the Pinakothek by order of Pope Pius XI, where it is located to this day. The opening of the Pinakothek in the new building took place on October 27, 1932.

The Vatican Pinakothek presents mainly works by Italian masters, as well as a collection of Byzantine art acquired by Pope Pius X; works by artists from other countries are few. In total, the collection contains about 460 paintings of the 12th-19th centuries, placed in 18 rooms of the Pinakothek in chronological order. By tradition, the collection contains only paintings on religious themes.

The Vatican is a must see for most in Rome. Therefore, a few tips for those who not only want to visit the Vatican, but also see the Pope (from a very close distance). A simple tourist can see the Pontiff at three events: • public audience (held on Wednesday mornings); • mass; • angelius (a sermon and prayer that the Pontifex reads every Sunday from the window of the Apostolic Palace in front of the people gathered in the square). The schedule of public events attended by the Pontifex is printed in advance on the website of the Prefecture of the Papal See http://www.

The Vatican Museums are huge. About 1400 rooms store more than 6.000 works of art. Already at the entrance you are picked up by a huge stream of people and carried through all the halls. Frescoes, paintings, sculptures, stunning ceiling paintings (especially in the Gallery of Geographical Maps) and the apotheosis of action - the Sistine Chapel. By the way, among other things, the Sistine Chapel is famous for the fact that it is here that conclaves are held - meetings of cardinals to choose a new Pope.

Agree with previous review. For more, you need to go on your own, book tickets, go to the opening and until the evening. There is a cafe inside. There would be only strength and desire. There are many guidebooks, go and see.

If this excursion is included in a visit to the Vatican (this is included in all excursions of bus tours) and you are in Italy for the first time, then it is a must to visit. The guide will give a minimum of information about the Pinakothek. For the first visit to the Vatican, this is enough. You can also see the Skstin Chapel. If you are ready to see a little more, to see the Stanzas of Raphael, you will have to refuse to visit St. Peter's Cathedral with a guide. At the exit of the Sistine Chapel, you hand over your headphones to the guide, return to the entrance to the Pinakothek and then follow the signs to Raphael's Stanzas.
