Basilica of San Lorenzo

Basilica of San Lorenzo
Italy, Florence
The Basilica of San Lorenzo is located in the central part of the city, near the Medici Palace and is an example of Renaissance architecture. The church was built in the 15th century by the famous master Filippo Brunelleschi. Inside the church you can see two pulpits by the great Donatello, the sarcophagus of Piero and Giovanni Medici by Verrocchio, the tombstones of the Medici by Michelangelo.

It is one of the largest and oldest churches in Florence. The first church was built here at the end of the IV century, then rebuilt in the XI century in the Romanesque style. The modern Renaissance building was erected in the 15th century by the famous architect Filippo Brunelleschi. Inside the temple are decorated with numerous works of art by Donatello, Michelangelo, Verocchio and other artists. Like the Duomo, Santa Croce and Santa Maria Novella, this church was to receive a facade of Carrara marble.

The Basilica of San Lorenzo was the main cathedral of Florence until the construction of the Duomo. Then the Medici became trustees of the church and rebuilt it with their own money and donations from wealthy families. And as a reward, they received the right to a family chapel inside the basilica (see Medici Chapels). Brunelleschi led the reconstruction work. The basilica is worth visiting. It contains a sufficient number of masterpieces of the Renaissance. But if you are limited in time, then (as for my taste) it is still preferable to visit only the Medici Chapels.
