Palace of Notaries

Italy, Bologna
Historic building in the center of Bologna, in Piazza Maggiore, between the Basilica of San Petronio and the Palazzo Communale. It is a brick rectangular building with a jagged top and ground canopies. It originally served as the headquarters of the guild of notaries, as evidenced by the coat of arms depicting three inkwells with goose quills located on the facade. The Palace of Notaries was completed and rebuilt more than once. The oldest part of the building dates from 1287. Frescoes of the 15th century have been preserved in the interior.

The Palace of Notaries is located in the heart of Bologna, in Piazza Maggiore. The palace was created by combining two buildings that already belonged to a corporation of notaries. The right wing, older, dates back to 1287. The left wing, overlooking the Basilica of St. Petronius, was built during the expansion of 1384-1388. Six magnificent windows with small marble partitions were designed by Antonio di Vincenzo (1385). The facade of the palace, overlooking the Accursio Palace, was rebuilt in about the same style in 1437 (Bartolomeo Fioravanti).
