There is a place in Budapest on the Embankment, where the heart involuntarily shrinks from overwhelming feelings and it becomes hard to breathe. This is a memorial to the victims of the Holocaust. It is dedicated to the Jews who were shot during the Second World War in Budapest. People were shot right on the Danube embankment. They were placed at the very edge, fettering several dozen people with one chain. One shot was enough to fall, one dragging the rest into the deep waters of the Danube. Jews were forced to take off their shoes, as they were very much appreciated during the war years.
