Monument to Artur Gergey

Monument to Arthur Gergey
Hungary, Budapest
The monument to the Hungarian commander and revolutionary Arthur Gergei (1818 - 1916) is located on the hill of the Bastion Promenade of the Buda Castle. During the Hungarian Revolution of 1848-49, Gergely, as commander-in-chief of the Hungarian rebel army, drove the Austrians out of Buda Castle. During the siege and hostilities, the royal castle burned down. After the defeat of the revolution, Arthur Gergely was forced to surrender to the mercy of the winners, which alienated the progressive part of Hungarian society from him. Only a few decades later, his merits during the Hungarian Revolution were recognized by his compatriots.
The monument was first erected on May 21, 1935, it was a bronze equestrian statue on a massive marble pedestal. Artur Gergei calmly, with dignity, sits on a horse, holding a headdress in his right hand, and reins in his left. The author of the monument, sculptor György Vastag, owns another work, also located on Castle Hill - a monument to the Hungarian hussar András Hadik. During the battles for the liberation of Budapest in 1944, the monument was badly damaged and was dismantled, and the bronze statue was melted down. In 1990, the monument to Arthur Gergei was recreated by the famous sculptor Laszlo Marton, the author of the famous "Little Princess" on the Danube embankment.

This bronze equestrian statue of the famous Hungarian military leader and revolutionary rises on the hill of the Buda Castle. It was he who led the siege of the castle of Buda, and subsequently captured it, as a result of which the royal castle burned to the ground ...The revolutionary fell out of favor, and only after his death was he acquitted, calling his actions useful for history. Now a monument reminds of his past exploits...I will also add that a wonderful perspective of the city opens up from this place, for example, I was lucky to shoot the sunset there.
