Meteora, Meteora
Greece, Meteora
Meteora is located in the mountains of Thessaly in northern Greece, near the village of Kalambaka. Meteora is a complex of Orthodox monasteries located on the tops of grandiose rocks. The rocks reach a height of 600 meters above sea level and are a rare geological phenomenon. In 1988, the monasteries were included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Resting in Greece, we decided to dilute our beach holiday and visit the "hanging" monasteries of Meteora, which are the pride of Greece. The tour lasted almost from early morning until late at night. We drove quite a long way (about 4 hours one way) to the settlement of Kalambaka, which is located at the foot of strange mountain fragments, similar to fingers stretched to the sky, on which the monasteries are located. They are also called the stone forest of the Thessalian plain. "Kalambaka" means in Greek "Come and see! ".

Meteora - monasteries floating on the rocks! Just a cosmic landscape. Spirit captures! And some sense of calm, peace! They did not expect to see this. A place that must be visited.

I am surprised that this attraction is still in 4th place on Turpravda. You give me the first! One of the most beautiful places in Europe. It's definitely worth a visit. There are only six monasteries, but in reality, even with a guided tour, even on your own, all 6 in one day is unrealistic. In addition, the most advantageous views are opened not so much from the monasteries as from simple viewing platforms, some even just on the road. And what sunsets here! I am sure that I will definitely come here again, only for a few days with accommodation in Kalambaka.

When I first got there, I remember how my breath was taken away ...And the first question that appeared in my head was, of course, the question HOW is this possible? How great must be the faith of people who built monasteries on sheer cliffs, at great heights, at a time when there was no need to talk about special equipment ...The rocks on which the monasteries are located are very unusual. I had never seen such rocks before. It turns out that these rocks are almost nowhere else to be found and previously they were the seabed, this is the reason for their strange appearance.
