It is the only Orthodox church in Greece that has a minaret in addition to the bell tower. Built in the Venetian period around 1320, the church was part of a Dominican monastery. After the capture of the city by the Turks, the temple was converted into a mosque and was named Hiugkar Tsamisi (Emperor's Mosque) in honor of the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire. The importance of the temple was emphasized by the two balconies on the minaret. Since 1928, the church of St. Nicholas again belongs to Orthodox Christians, and the minaret was left in memory of the rule of the Turks.→
