House and garden of Claude Monet in Giverny

Fondation Claude Monet, Claude Monet's House and Gardens
France, Rouen
Claude Monet drew attention to the picturesqueness of Giverny, passing by the village by train, and soon decided to move here and rented a house with a plot of land. Later, he laid out a beautiful garden on the site with a pond and Japanese-style bridges. The great artist more than once, inspired by the wonderful landscapes of the garden, transferred them to the canvases of his paintings. Monet's masterpieces such as "Pond with Lilies" and "Water Lilies" were created here. In 1966, the artist's son Michel Monet bequeathed the estate and the garden around it to the state.

Giverny is either a town or a village, not far from Vernon. The settlement was mentioned for the first time in the 11th century under the Latinized name Giverniacum. It is assumed that the name comes from the Celtic word for "goat". The settlement was the domain of the abbeys. The Rouen abbey of Saint-Ouen owned it longer than others. The settlement is one long main street. This street is named after Monet. It contains all the important objects. It is crossed by several small ones. On the main street there is Monet's house, an impressionist museum, a tourist office, artists' ateliers, restaurants, a church, a cemetery.

Claude Monet lived in Giverny from 1883 and died here in 1926. He and many members of his family are buried in the local village cemetery. Now it is one of the most popular tourist destinations, especially in summer when water lilies bloom on the pond. I was lucky enough to visit Giverny in October, at this time it is also very beautiful there. A little disappointed was the absence of the artist's paintings in the house - only reproductions. It is forbidden to take pictures indoors, but it is, in principle, not easy to do because of the crowds of visitors (I can imagine what a crush there is in the summer).
